We are going to migrate our switch from a Nortel Sl100 to a new switch. Which one, not sure. We are being told it's a NEC Univerge 3C or an Avaya. Leaning towards NEC. Not sure what its capabilities are or if its functions are comparable to the SL100. Has anyone had problems? What phones can I use on it? Proprietary? Voice mail capability and call trees?

Hi,

I see that you mentioned NEC and Avaya, but have you looked at E-Metrotel? E-Metrotel is the next generation Nortel replacement that allows you to upgrade your current PBX while keeping your existing Nortel phones. By going with a NEC solution, would require that you purchase all new handsets. With the E-Metrotel system, you could retain all of your Nortel M2000 series and M3900 series digital telephones. When you upgrade to the E-Metrotel UCx you get all of the new advanced features such as VoIP, Unified Communications, etc. but save all of the money that is required when purchasing new handsets, and perhaps, re-wiring to support IP Phones. E-Metrotel's website is: You can also check out some of "JoetheUcxGuy's" videos on youtube, which demonstrate the functionality of the UCx with the Nortel digital phones:
With the ability to upgrade only the PBX, you maintain the original investment that you placed into the Nortel Phones. Also- your users are probably very comfortable with the way Nortel Phones work, using E-Metrotel the phones work nearly identical to the way they are used to, so you can also save on time/money to retrain all of your employees. NEC makes a very good system, and I really NEC a lot. However, in a situation like this, to me, it would make the most sense to go with E-Metrotel.
