Hi,

I am new to macs and have been given an old Clamshell iBook, which was in a bit of a state. I have the original disks (Mac os 9.0.4) and so restored it to it's original state. After restarting it I have been getting and 'Illegal Instruction' error, which I have found out is something to do with extensions. I am working through trying to find which one is causing the problem but I am a bit confused as to why this is a problem, when I have restored it. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Was this a clean install (meaning the old system was deleted when restored) or did you simply refresh the existing system?

You might try starting from the CD and running Disk First Aid to make sure the the hard drive is ok. You'll find it on the cd in a utilties folder.

To see if its a bad extension or control panel, hold down the shift key while starting up. This will start up the machine with all extensions and control panels off. If it starts, it's a bad extension etc. If you still get the message, it's not.

Be careful ot the term clean install on a mac classic. It's different than PC. If you selected Clean Install when you installed the OS, it kept all the old settings and any extensions and control panels that were installed in the old system folder for anything but the mac OS - like printer drivers etc. That's why Jimoblak clarified his answer.

You have to be careful when doing a full install vs a clean install. For instance, any additional fonts will be lost in a full install vs a clean install.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4
