i've just installed mandrake 8.2 and have to install a variety of web browsers netscape 7, mozilla etc - I logged in as a normal user and downloaded the zip files - I unzipped them and then I logged in as SU to install the program:

Where should the programs be installed? What is the equivalent of c:programs in linux?

Any help much appreciated as well as any help with respect to installing new packages.

applications meant for all users will be avaliable in /usr/bin ( only the executables ).

so when u install netscape, irrespective from where u tried to install, the executable will be put in /usr/bin.

only when u install an application with the source code with the "prefix" option set to the required directory.
