New to IP

Work on Partner, Merlin and Nortel for years. Sone is suggesting I try an IP for a small 130 room Motel with DuVoice for the wake-up calling and voice mail.

What type of learning curve will I have to train myself on the IP with my 30 years of service and experience on the Partner, Merlin and Nortel?

Since you know telephony, it's not too bad. However, IP Office is a different animal with MANY little "best method" points. This is not a "install one or two" kind of product. Either you take it on full steam or don't do it at all. You MUST be comfortable with computers and networking to be successful. From Avaya's point of view, there are seperate authorizations to sell and install the product. Taking the class is the best way to get ramped up quickly - when I took it (2002) it was a week + 2 days. Don't know how it is structured now. Don't do it just for this one motel!

Thanks for the advice. I am happy with the older Avaya stuff and the Nortel. I have plenty of demand for it. DuVoice is suggestiong that I install a Magix and Metroline direct has some good prices.

How is your experience on the Magix. I have only Partner and the small Merlin key systems under my belt.

I want to be able to keep the installed 2500 sets with MWI on them to save the customer costs.

I wish that Partner could expand to 130 stations but it will not.

If you don't go into the call centre stuff and for the motel you probably won't then you should be better off with the Magix then with the IPO, Magix is still a phone system IPO is entirely different even though the GUI is nicer to work on then the Magix SPM. Having said that Mike is right just for one Motel install don't do it or you will get grey (if you not already are after 30 years in this business) over the little corks that can happen if you don't follow the path that the IPO wants and needs.
If you want to get into it anyways find someone locally that has the knowledge to support you and you learn it from the beginning but if you don't have that and try it via manual then better don't tempt fait. This forum is full of people that try and fail on very simple steps that every phone system has because they just don't know and don't want to read 10000 pages of manuals to get all the info that has accumulated in some heads over the years.

Looks like I will waty with either the Nortel with 9 ASM mods and the DuVoice or try my hand at the Magix with DuVoice.

I will prob. bring in a small IP and set up a test bed to play with at my office and train myself when I have some off time so I do not have the stress and demands of a cutover.

thats the best way to learn, whenever i am free i skinm the manuals, find stuff i have never tried or programmed and mess around with it.
