New to EMC storage 2

I've seen an EMC ax100 on sale on Ebay. What software should I make sure is on the array. In order to attach hosts to the array through a couple of Brocade Switches, do I need any software to see the luns. I'm mainly using Solaris 10 and will use MPXIO, instead of Powerpath. I know there is a Flare OE, but if its not on there, how would I get it?

If FLARE isn't installed on the unit, that has to be installed by an EMC Field Technician.

On each server you'll need an MPIO driver of some sort. Windows has one which is included. If you want a better one you can purchase EMC's PowerPath licenses and install PowerPath on the servers. You'll also want to install NaviAgent on the servers as well.

The array is configured via a web browser.

The ability to configure through the web browser is dependent on the Flare OE being on the array? Are the NaviAgent's for NaviSphere?

Yes the ability to configure the array via your web browser is dependent on the array already having flare on it. The NaviAgent's which are installed on the servers are to allow the array to talk to the servers, and inform them of a failure of the SP, or in case the LUNs have been manually trespassed from one SP to the other.

Does the NaviAgent also allow the OS to see the LUNs?

Actually I'd like to know is the NaviAgent the only way for the OS to see the LUNs. I'm used to Hitachi SAN, and once the LUNs are assigned and then scanned on Solaris, format command will show the LUNs. Wondering is it the same with EMC.

Yes you will be able to use the array without the NaviAgent installed on the server. But I believe powerpath is also free on the ax100.

Everything will work without NaviAgent. Without NaviAgent if you trespass a LUN from one SP to another, then OS will take a very short outage while this happens. With NaviAgent this short outage is removed and the trespass is done seamlessly.

PowerPath can be installed in a free mode on servers with limited functionality against any EMC (and some other) arrays. To get the higher end functionality you need the license.

Would anyone have a FLARE OE for a FC4700?

I've seen a picture of the Longbow motherboard for an EMC 4700. I has a hard drive on board, what is it used for?

That hard drive is used to hold the FLARE OS which runs the array. Later models don't have this internal drive.

So if the FLARE OE is on this drive, is there any space taken away from the drives on the Disk Unit?

I don't believe that these old units use any space on the shelves for FLARE. That came in the later units.

I'm remembering from memory, it's been a long time since I've looked at an FC4700.
