I am new to EDI and I am trying to put together an 850 X12 transaction and have some questions:
1. If an element type is ID are there industry defined standard values that must be used or can I use whatever value I want. If the values are predefined where do I find a list of what to use.
2. How do I know what to put where? For instance we have a requirement on the PO that the customer tells if the ship to address is an Alternate Address (different than there default ship to), Blind Address or Double Blind. What segment in the transaction do I put this?

Thanks

1. There are defined "standard" values. I personally do not know of a free list, but you can join ASC x12 at through which you should be able to obtain the standards.

2. This will be part of the standard mapping that you use. I always ask customers to send us the full ship to address on each transaction, so we never get it wrong.

A little late - sorry.

Welcome to EDI - the most non standard standard that has ever been conjured up!

As for alternate shipping - yes - that is possible using the N1-4 segments
One way:
N1*ST*Customer Name
N3*address-line1*address-line2
N3*address-line3*address-line4 (if needed)
N4*city*state*zip

As for the ID question - Yes there are industry standards - do a google search for "EDI 850" and take a look at other
companies' EDI Guidelines -
