I downloaded a copy of Solaris 8 off Sun's web site. I am going to partition my drive tonight (and probably in the days to come) and hope to install solaris and run a dual booting machine with Windows 2000 and Sol-8 on a 40Gb drive. I believe I have the mapping for the drive correct, but we will have to see. Was wondering if you guys could provide any tips or tricks that you all learned when encountering this same process. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi ,
Follow these steps:

1- Install Solaris 8 in "primary partition"
2- Install W2000 on extended partition (don't worry if Solaris becomes unavailable).
3- Install "Boot Magic" in W2000
4- Configure boot magic to W2000 and Solaris (notice that Solaris will have 2 partitions (you should configure to boot from boot partition)

I hope this helps.....

Thanks for the help.

At what point do I install Solaris? From my understanding, I am going to resize, partition the HD with boot magic like so (from first to last):
* create a 5Meg partition for boot magic
* create the root partition for Solaris
* create the whole windows 2K psartition
* create a logical partition (place other unix partitions in there)

That part I understand, but when will I boot from cdrom and install Solaris? Also, am I wrong with my plan I got? Feel free to hook me up on AOL IM (kegnut). Thanks again for the help.

Hi,
I had done that long time back but from what I remember I think u will need 2 partitions for solaris(Non-Dos partition). After creating the partitions, install the Solaris OS and then Win2K....and then configure the Boot-magic....

what i had experienced is that the solaris gets installed better in the first 8GB partition and the rest can be left for the WIN2k and what is best neede for the solaris is that it needs a non DOS partition to occupy and leaves the rest fopr the other partitions to occupy and donot worry to do the partitioning aspect as it is very easy to install both the os's when u first try to install the solaris8 and then the win2k maaan.
and whence u do the installations uget a dual boot by itself and do not mind for anything that bothers or boggles ur mind just do the partitions as the os's ask for and do not try to overwrite anything that comes in the way
just be in touch so that i can guide to best of my level

bye then
good luck

Once I do get Solaris loaded and all is well...can I configure solaris for dialup?

Thanks

yeah u can do anything on solaris once u install and try to explore then its ok fine
u can do dial up
be in touch

Correction to my original statement...I Have Windows ME already installed. Will I have to reinstall this? Or will partition magic do the trick? And also, will this correction mess up the order of install?

Thanks for the help!

Though i didnot try with ME but yeah u can do with the partition magic just try to move the existing partition to a later sector like after any where around 8gb if u want to have entire 8gb else can start with the 4gb portion and try to create a non-dos from the first sector and then u can find it easy to install the solaris os
regards
