Ok guys,

I'm totally new to DNS and being thrown in at the deep end!

I've got a W2k Server with Active Directory and DNS Server installed on it. How do I configure the DNS so the users on our soon to be new intranet can type in their browsers and up comes the machine. I assume this is the way that I have to do it?

Is it a forward or reverse lookup?

Forward Lookup Zones map ComputerNames to IP addresses.
Reverse Lookup Zones may IP addresses to ComputerNames.

"...type in their browsers and up comes the machine".

I'm not sure what you mean (up comes which machine)? but...

if you want your new Win2K clients to have Internal name resolution, you need to add the address of your DNS server as the Primary DNS server on the Properties page of the users network connection.

Alternately, if you are using DHCP on your new network, you can confiure your DHCP server to hand out the address of your DNS server to it's clients.

Hope this helps,

ok, sorry, my fault - should have explained a little better.

I have a web server to which in the address bar I can type and up comes the index.html page.

What I want to be able to do is change the name in the address bar to or simular.

Hope that makes better sense. ~ Remember - Nothing is Fool Proof to a Talented Fool ~

- In Forward Lookup Zones create one new primary zone called "domain.com".

- In your new "domain.com" zone create one new host (A) with name " and the IP your web is responding to.

- Configure your internal clients with this DNS server, be sure this server has connection with internet or your clients can´t resolve other DNS names than "
