Hi,

Have just got a new Windows 2000 Server installed, and want to create a very basice Active Directory structure.

This server and network is completely cut off from the Internet, no external access is required nor available.

So I open DNS in MMC and create a new forward look-up zone, called COMPANY.LOCAL

I set the TCP/IP properties for the server (192.9.200.150) to use this IP address as the preferred DNS server.

But Active Directory wizard (DCPROMO) still thinks that DNS needs setting up.... what am i missing out or doing wrong?!

All suggestions and advice are gratefully received.

Many thanks

Clear out the dns info that you have and let the AD setup create it for you. You will have less config problems later.

If i do this i get the message:

the operation failed with the following error:

The network location cannot be reached

When i look in DNS nothing has been setup.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you run dcpromo yet? Or have you gone to start --> programs --> admin tools and opened configure your server and selected Active directory yet? If not then do that first. If you have then what does it say when you go to start --> programs --> admin tools and opened configure your server and select Active directory.

i've got it!

it's coz i hadn't got the server connected to a switch

it needs to have some kind of network connectivity to install from DCPROMO, so connecting it to a switch or hub or something solved the problem
