New to Avaya Definity 3

I am needing to learn our phone system. It's the Avaya Definity G3(GSI) and the Octel voice mail.

Can anyone provide a starting point for reading? I have started reading the "Administrator’s Guide for
Avaya Communication Manager" that I downloaded from their website.

Also, is there a way I can run a GUI remotely to administer the G3?

First, find out what version you are running. Do a "disp sys cust" (without quotes) in terminal. Here are a few links to give you a overview of some of the more common features used.

If you want to manage the system remotely, you will need Avaya Site Administration (ASA). Depending on the version of your definity will determine how you connect. If you do the above command and also a "list config all" let us know what you have and we can point you in the right direction. I hope someone can chime in with info on the Octel. I don't have any info for ya...sorry.

Which octel do u have? Post this information in the octel forum for help.
The "System’s Little Instruction Books" that the link given in the first post, are excellent. There are also some training cd roms produced by Avaya that are excellent. Maybe your company already owns them?

Perhaps these are links to them but I'd suggest going to support.avaya.com and search for "Little Instruction Book". This will give you a choice of several topics, including Basic Administration and Basic Diagnostics, etc. in numerous languages.

Ok. First off. Thank you very much for all of you guys help!!

It is the Definity G3 Version 12
Location 1 Platform 2
Call Center shows as version 12.0

under the list config all: processor TN2404 vintage 09

As for Octel it's Octel 250 and looks like on the sticker it says "ARIA"

I am going over to look for the Octel forum.

Oh yeah, what type of remote access for configuration do I have with this version?

That was all you had in the "list config all"? What login are you using to get into the Definity? Do you have a C-Lan? You may have to pop off the front panels to see what boards you have. They are labeled in the front of the carriers.

Sorry, There was so much data listed with that command I wasn't sure what was needed.

There are Digital Lines, Aux Trunk, CO Trunk, DSI interfaces, VAL announcement.

I am going back to find out about the C-Lan...

One of the main reasons I am interested in remote access, so I don't have to keep walking back and forth...

Their is a program called ASA or Avaya Site Administration. It was designed to allow remote users do administration. The connectivity is done either through a network connection (your C-LAN card) or through a modem connection (using your INADS port). I would look for a copy of ASA. It works well and does save a lot of steps.

As mike said the Definity Site Administration software is the best place to start (i have a copy but it is a full CD so it will be a bit problem to send it ).
it gives you a nice GUI and an option for remote control over your switch.
And again take a look at all the CD's you got in your company - Avaya gives allot of documentation over CD's when they install the switch.

As for the ASA, I have read about that in the book I D/L from Avaya's website. I will being my journey

You can use ASA with voicemail as well...depending on what type. Let us know if you hit any snags.

I use procom for connecting to our 250. Any terminal program should work as long as it can do WYSE

We have a bit older G3. We use procomm plus through a modem connection to the INADS port. The best terminal emulation to use is 4410, its made for it. Select 4410 in procomm and then when you log in type 4410 when terminal type is requested.
