Tomorrow morning I have to add a new T1 card (MM710B) into a G700 gateway. They will be changing over from 8 POTS lines to the T1. My question is this- Do I have to be there at 6:00am so I can power the sytem down first, or can I sleep in til 10:00 and just slide the card in while the system is up and running?

I have had two different tech support people comment on this- one said "no problem, do it live" the other said "under no circumstances should you do this live."

Any thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you

MM cards are "hot swappable" in AVAYA's media gateways, the only exception to this would be the MM312/MM314/MM316 modules in slot V6 of the G350, those are not recomended for hot installation, they have been known to blow up...

Everything else can be inserted or removed hot (although you should shut down an S8300 blade before removal)

I second what Mitch said. The tech support person that said don't do it live is wrong.

I always took a "do it off hours" approach towards those cards at first, but I'd done a couple hot swaps and they are fine...

Thank you all.

FYI- Tech support at CATALYST is the one who told me not to hot swap.

Makes you wonder, don't it.

now that's funny. Someone should forward this link to Catalyst.

Follow-up

Put it in "hot" no problems- came right up and was recognized right away.

Thanks again.

remember to set the sync on that gateway for the 710......

I'm sure that's important to someone, but not being a programmer, I have no idea what that even means. LOL!

I will pass it on.

ATI2ner,

do this:

telnet or SSH into the G700, then type "config"

"set sync interface primary vN" (where N is the slot # the MM710 is installed in)
"set sync source primary" (this will set the sync source to what you just defined)

then you can do a "show sync timing" to see if the T1/PRI is being used as the synchronization source for that G700

Really- I don't care... I was paid to put the card in- The card is in. Someone else is being paid to do program.

Thanks anyway.

That's a poor attitude ATI2ner, unless you plan on becoming a parts-swapper, and those jobs don't pay much.

I'm trying to "learn" you something here :)

I appriciate that Mitch.

I've only been doing this for 2 years. I'm great with IP Office, just starting the CM stuff. Others in our company are "THE PROs" at that, so I know my nitch.

And when a multi-national company calls my company and says we will pay you X dollars to go here and put this card in, I don't get too excited about the other aspects of the project.

And instead of bugging my boss with simple questions, I try to find the answer on my own. Thus the two different opinions about "HOT SWAPING."
