Heys guys,
We just got a server back from being repaired and I replaced it with one that was holding its place. While it was away I setup AD and FRS replication. Now nothing works. Server1 works great, but Server2 (one just added back) doesn't allow people to print thruogh it doesn't allow me access AD Users/Sites/Domains anything.

Basically I took the hard drives out of the standin and placed them back in the computer then I made sure the IPS were the same. Everything runs great except for that.

Any Ideas? I don't even know where to begin

when i attempt to remove AD via DCPromo it says that the specified domain doesn't exist or could not be contacted.

I have manually removed the computer using ntdsutil...

I just basically need to disconnect it and rejoin the computer

but i can't remove it from the domain yet it can't see the domain?!

Have you kind of created Server3? Chassis from Server1, drives from Server2. Have you tried accessing it from the DC to see what happens, or is THIS the DC?

Sorry, my post was sent after yours.

MarkDMac has a script that will clean up metadata, you might try that. The Spidors Parlor or something like that.

I have a Dell Server1 that's running everything.

Server2 crashed and I took the harddrives out of it and put it in my computer which made it Server2 (temp)

I setup FRS and AD while the computer was being repaired

Then I took the harddrives back out and put htem in the repaired server2.

Now AD and FRS don't work I have tried to remove the data in active directory via this link

and it didn't really do anything.

I tried renaming the server but it says

"the specifried domain either does not exist or could not be contacted"

but it won't let me change the domain either?!

Will it let you drop the domain and use a workgroup?

This is kind of a sledghammer approach but you could unplug that server and then change from domain to workgroup. Then in the DNS and AD/computers remove all references to the server. Then plug it back in and rejoin the domain and reinstall AD. Just a thought.

so remove the network cables

uninstall AD

remove references. (what's the best way?)

then once that's done start over again?

uh oh... when I unplug the network cards it doesn't let me change to a workgroup.

Will it let you change to a workgroup with it plugged in?

yes even after a restart. It states that "a domain cannot be moved from one domain to another"

and greys out the boxes

it won't let me change to workgroup either way because it is a domain controller.

i tried to demote it with DCPromo but it errors and says it can't reach the Domain or says it doesn't exist

I'm out of ideas. Is this a single drive or RAID or what? Could you uninstall the OS and then reinstall the OS, rejoin the domain under a new name, new AD, etc.

How would I go about changing the name? and what do you mean by new AD?

I have attempted to change the name and it won't allow it because it can't find the domain.

It'd really be a pain to have to redo the server there is a lot riding on that system.

If you have followed the link you posted then server 2 no longer exists as a dc in your domain since all references to it in the metadata have been removed.

Power off server2 and leave it alone, use the link again to check that metadata for that server have in fact been removed, if they have that is good and then re-install windows on server2 and then dcpromo back to dc. If remnants of that server remain in metadata remove them and then wipe server2 and re-install windows and dcpromo back to a dc.

Did server2 hold any fsmo roles (on server1 open a command prompt and type 'netdom query fsmo' without the quotes to determins which server holds the roles. If server2 holds a role you will need to seize it. This link tells you how to seize roles if you need to;

What I'm talking about is to reinstall the 2003 OS. Would take maybe 45 minutes. When it starts back up name it Server3 of something other than Server1 or Server2, then rejoin the domain, add the AD and replication services. You don't reformat so you don't lose the data. By the way, is it mirrored or what?

Hang on a moment....
How do you actually know that AD and FRS are not working?? What errors are you getting?? What is in the event logs??
