Hi, have a recently installed SBS 2003 server. all of my client pc's are using as their DNS server. It seems to take a very long time to display any web-sites. Quite often it will fail to display the web site at the first time of asking. When i switch all of my clients to use my sonicwall firewall as their DNS server it is nice and quick and causes no problems. Unfortunately i am then unable to point users at the companyweb intranet stored on the SBS server. Anyone got any ideas????

What is the SBS box using as forwarders in the DNS? I'll bet their either empty, or the first one is bad/down/incorrect. If that's the case, it would timeout and roll to the next one.

In the DNSAdmin tool on your server, you need to get properties on the name of your server. In there, you need to populate the Forwarders tab with your ISP's DNS servers, the same ones that you populated your sonicwall with.

hi could you explain this a little more to me, i have looked in the dns admin tool but dont really know what im looking for.

If you read my post carefully while looking at the DNSAdmin tool, it should be pretty clear. I named specific places to be looking at configurations.

Did you run the Email and Internet configuration Wizard to set up the box?

To get to the DNS forwarders you click as follows Start> Server Management> Advanced Mangement>Computer Management >Services and Applications> DNS> Expand your Server Name> Right Click Your servername and select properties> Click on the Forwarders Tab> In the "Selected Domain's Forwarder IP_ address list add the list that your ISP provided you for DNS. You should not have you IP address here. They usually give you at least 2. All of you clients should be pointing to your SBS server only. Good luck.
