Hi, I just installed a brand new windows server 2k3 standard and ever since the internet has been unbearably slow! All my servers are pointing to the one new DNS server and it is pointing to itself. Should it be configured somewhere to point to an outside DNS server if it doesn’t know the address? Is there an internet caching setting or DNS caching setting somewhere? Please walk me through what changes need to be made. Thanks.

in your dns settings (right click on the server in dns and click properties), there is a section for forwarders, this needs to be on, with the dns servers of your isp in the forwarders section, this will point your dns server to the internet for dns queries it cant resolve.

PS if you dont know your ISP's dns then you can use another isp's for example : 212.23.3.100, 213.23.6.100 (zen internet)

I did the forwarders but it is still extremely slow. Is there a cache size or a certain amount of dns queries remembered setting? Thanks for the tip though even though I had done it already. Any advice would be peachy, yet dare i say it, superb!

How many clients is the DNS server servicing?

Where are you forwarding to it could be an issue with your ISP?

I had the exact same problem. And we only have 10 clients on my company. I could not fix it so i reinstalled the server :D

Run NetDiag /v
Run DcDaig /v while you at it

Use the Pathping command from your Lan to a decent site such as Yahoo. You should have a few % in lost packets if any, correct the MTU setting if you have many errors
Pathping your ISPs DNS server's IPs also.
