Got a new Avaya IPO 500 V2 but didn't receive the SD card and so is the essential edition R9 license. So for the time being, plugged in an old SAD card that had R7 licenses.

Now have got the new SD card and the essential edition R9 license. but getting this upgrade to 8 error when plug in the new SD Card.

What I did after plugging in the new card is after logging in, I erase the previous config ( File - Advanced). I re logged in again, it prompted to select mode and I selected IP Office Standard. After that getting this upgrade error without even entering the essential R9 License.

Any help?

The control unit is locked to its release, not the sd card. You need an upgrade license. Avaya will not give you one.

The old sd card downgraded the system to r7.
I though r7 had the 90 days grace period though.
You could recreate the new sd in r7 and then upgrade the system to 8.1. Then 9.0-9.1 and see how far you get.

Correct me, I thought everything is stored in SD card - version, licenses, etc and IPO 500 v2 chassis is just an empty box? I just upgraded the system to 9.1 via file->advanced->upgrade but still that upgrade to 8 required. When upgrading, it prompted " Upgrading IP Office to release 5.0 and beyond requires a software run-time license....".

SO if new ipo was plugged in with new SD card and an essetial R9 licence in the first place, this upgrade error would not have appeared?

Licences are tied to the SD Card, usable software levels are tied to the physical chassis.

The level of software that a new IP500 V2 runs is permanently recorded by the system - no the SD card.

So if you first installed it with an R7 SD card you now need an upgrade license to run software release higher than release 7.

You should have upgraded the contents of the SD card to Release 9.1 before putting it in the system and switching on.

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

OK so a new IPO comes with a software level?

A new IPO acquires its software version from the first SD card it get connected with?

The version the system runs on is determined by the SD card yes, but the 500 chassis itself gets locked to a particular release, otherwise you could simply upgrade all your customers to the latest version for free by upgrading the SD card.

The issue stems from the fact they can't/don't want to make the system dependant on runtime licences out the box, as they would have major issues when people get old stock and then ask for the latest runtime licence, how do Avaya know when they bought the kit?

So when a system is "new" it doesn't need a runtime licence, only after that first use it needs licences to be upgraded :)

OK, by plugging in new IPO with an old SD card made this new IPO locked to a particular release. Now I have a new SD with an essential R9 license which we ordered with this new IPO. But now IPO requires an upgrade license in order to run with this new SD card :/damn!

As suggested, recreating a new SD card to R7 would do any good? I have installed the manager 7.0.27 and I can see new SD card is 9.1.2.

We just need some analog and digital phones to run and nothing else.

Yes, running R7 will be OK as long as you don't have any ATMv2 cards/combo cards with ATMv2 fitted as they will not work :)

Just leave it at 7.0.36 then. Go as high as you can without an upgrade license.
If the 90 day rule applies you may get to 8.1.9x something.

Remember: mistakes only happen to people who do real work. Do it again though and you've got some questions to ask yourself.

Just checked that IPO has 1 DS8 and 3 Phone8 cards all fitted with ATM4 cards. Soallwill be upandrunning if I recreate new SD Card to R7 and say goodbye to essential R9 license?

Thank you for the input. I will recreate the new SD card 9.1 to 7.0 and see if I can get the system back. as I know, you don't need a separate essential license for SD card R7 as it comes with a built in one. So where the SD card will get that built in essential license once I recreate it to 7.0? Would it take the R9 essential license key I have? Or nothing is required for recreated R7?

Downgrading a new IPO to r7 is kind of hard pill to digest but gotta do it.

OK I just recreated the SD card from 9.1 to 7.0. Now it is giving network error when try to login with Administrator. Tried on different laptop, it gave failed login error...Laptop is directly connected to IPO and getting pings alright. Any idea?

Is there any way I can find out what release/level exactly IPO chassis is on? Also what about erasing core software using reset button or debug? Would it erase chassis's software level and make it 'empty'?

You should be able to default the system with the reset button. Just a note that if you have IPOSS you should be able to get a free 9.1 upgrade license to solve your issues. Clearing the software will not fix the issue of it being stuck at 7.0.
