Just finished building up my new computer
--Rough Specs--
AM2 6000+
Nvidia 7800GT
2GB Ram

And ive had a lot of trouble with it going dead for no reason, checked the temprature and thats ok, its a 600W PSU so i dont think its the PSU.

It cuts out at random places like playing the chess game you get on vista, the next time it could be when i enter my password when loging in.

Anyone have any ideas????

Do you mean that it dies or just freezes?
How long before it cuts out, roughly?
Are all the fans working OK?
Have you checked the event log to see if it has anything useful in there?
To make sure that it is not driver related & it is the hardware, you could try a Linux live CD such as Puppy Linux:
If it shuts off whilst using that then it will most likely be a hardware fault.

It just dies as in all the power goes off execept the fan in the psu which continues to turn for a few minutes after (its ment to do that)

Theres no specific time till it shuts off if i do very little it dosnt turn off but for instance if a play that chess game it shuts down on mi second turn, however ive run aquamark3 to test the system and that didnt cause it to shut down

Yeah all the fans are working and nothing comes up in the event log, gonna try that puppylinix cd now

I second that, it could be related to CPU and mobo issues. Most of the times are related to the CPU is it overheats it shuts down.

You might want to get a "Troubleshooter" problem which is excellent tool to test your system.

It's not free but the best tool to use to trouble everything on your system

good advice sofar...

I would:

1. check all connectors again, could be heat related creeping...

2. ditto on the heatsink... either not correctly seated or not enough heatsink compound...

3. check the seating on the graphics card and ram... cause as above in 1...

4. check the settings in the BIOS as to HARDWARE MONITORING, some mobos have a shutdown function when a CPU overheats or when a FAN is not rotating fast enough (ie. it is set to monitor an 80mm fan at 3000rpm, but you have a 120mm fan which only rotates at 1200rpm, etc...), if that is the case disable the FAN monitoring and up the TEMP setting for the CPU (modern CPU's have an internal shutoff when temps reach to high)...

Checked the heatsinks and there ok, checked the tempretures in bios and there not getting to hot, re-installed vista and i can play chess but (which i could not previously) but it still goes dead at completly random times

Can you borrow a power supply? Easiest thing to check. Just because it is 600w doesn't mean it can't have a defect.

Actually, it's not just the wattage of the PSU that is important, but also the amount of current it provides on each rail. If, for example, you had a lot of peripherals plugged into or chained off of the same connector, you could easily draw more current that the PSU could provide and still be well under 600W.

Exactly what kmcferrin said---tofa83 did say he benchmarked the CPU with no faults, so no overheating. Usually when the pc powers off randomly, but is able to be brought up again, I would look at the cpu. However, I have usually only seen (can I use two adverbs like that for the same verb? getting old...) the computer actually reboot rather than completely power off...this is why I brought up the MoBo. However, other things like the power supply, or even the power switch (check the switch in and out several times, and check the connection on the MoBo) can be at fault. Is this plugged into a surge protector? Also, does it power off when the computer is idle, or only when you are playing chess? Does the motherboard have a native graphics connection? In other words, can you take the video card out to eliminate this as a possibility?

Burt

Yeah its plugged into an RCD Plug (One of them plugs which trips out) but the PSU fans continue after it has gone dead which is normal to cool down the PSU after it has turned off, also the monitor still works which is plugged into the same 4-Way adapter.

It dosn't have a native graphics connection, ive had a CPU stress tester running over night running both cores at 100% for over 10hrs and its still working but if i start doing some other stuff like playin Neverwinters nights2 or browse the internet it will cut out.

Instaled Fedora7 that was ok but didnt do that much with it
