I would appreciate some help with this issue. I publish a small genealogical magazine. All of the surnames included in the publication are bold and in caps. In the past InDesign has always recognized that the surnames are in caps and reflected this in the New Page Reference window, and added the name to the index in caps. Today I started indexing for the current issue and InDesign is no longer recognizing that the surname are all caps. How can I correct this? I usually use the key strokes Ctrl+U to add a new page reference. I have a lot of surnames in this issue and at the moment I am having to re-type in the surname. would really appreciate some help.

...i've noticed this if the word has been capitalised via the control panel or shortcut (stylised in other words), if you go to Preferences > Composition and turn on "Substituted Glyphs' it will highlight such instances...

...these captalized words can be created using the shortcut apple/command + shift + K, or in the character palette flyout menu...

...if however you right click a word and choose Change Case > UPPERCASE, it behaves differently...

Andrew

...it is likely the letters have been typed in lowercase and then stylised as I mention above, therefore indesign still thinks they are lowercase...

...there is a capitalise function in the index palette, but this only performs an initial capital word...

Andrew

...have you looked into paragraph styles to assist in how the index is created?

...you can have a style that is set to All Caps and applied to a certain index level, under level style, maybe this would help???

Hi,

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure exactly what caused the problem. I type the documents in Word and then place/import in to InDesign. So the caps are in place before the document is used in InDesign. I have never had this happen before.

I have been using InDesign for a little over a year, and I am still learning. I use it to publish a quarterly, so I don't use it everyday. I do not understand how to use paragraph styles. I purchased a "Dummies" book, but it doesn't give a very detailed explanation. I would love to learn how to use this function so I would not have to manually format the index. Right now I generate the index, and then bold the surnames and italicize the given names one at a time. Needless to say it takes forever. Any suggestions on a good resource to learn how to use this function?

Thanks,

...styling indexes is performed in the generate index dialog, the middle section mainly...

...paragraph styles are created automatically from a created index, go to window > type and tables > paragraph styles...

...the automatic styles will be labelled, double click one and change the basic character format options, a pull down menu named 'Case', in there is 'All Caps'...

Andrew

...for example if your names are on the default level one, then you can change the Index Level 1 paragraph style to 'All Caps' in basic character format options, then all level one entries will be in that style...

Andrew

...also make sure you have the index text frame deselected when you change a paragraph style or the whole index changes and possibly any other text frame you might not know is selected for that matter...

Andrew

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I will see what I can do, and let you know.
