Hello everyone
We are going to get another nw server adn I thought you might give me some good advice.

We currently have 3 nw server in the tree. all have zfd 3.2 on them.
1. NW6 sp2
2. NW 5.1 sp7
3. NW 5 sp6

The last server is very old and this new server is going to be a replacement for that one, but we will run them both until everything is stable with the new server.

My question is. Is there any problem integrating a NW 6.5 with latest zfd (is it 6.5 ?) in this tree, what do I have to think about when installing it ?

/Dan

Dan,
Hopefully someone else will respond to this, but I think your main concern will be to make sure that all servers are running the same version of NDS - Oops, I mean eDirectory. After that, check the documentation to see which service packs you need on the various versions of the OS. Is there anyway you can get all servers on the same version? Prefereably 6.5?

upgrading all server to 6.5 might be done later on, but I think first off I have to get the new server in and the oldest server out.

I dont' quite understand your question about integrating NW6.5 with Zen 6.5.. That's a given that it will work.

Like Iolair suggested, I would be more concerned about your versions of NDS. But there is no way to put eDir on NetWare 5.0..It's not supported and I dont' even think it will install. So just make sure that your tree is healthy, and you should probably have the latest service packs as well as the newest NDS versions on each one. If you don't already have NDS 8 or eDir on your NW5.1 server, just make sure you have at least NDS 7.62C.

There is nds 8 on all of them now (some different versions, but atleast 8.something).

The question about nw6.5 and zen 6.5 was because I´m running 3.2 now. Do I just simply uninstall 3.2 and install 6.5 on all server instead ?

Maybe it is better to do a migration from the old server with nw5 to the new server with 6.5 ? what do you think ?

Hi again, everyone,

Hi Hellbeach,

I have a NW 6.5 server that I migrated from NW 5.1.

Following the instructions, you have to set up a "Pre-Migration" 6.5 server in a temporary tree. After updating several files on the 5.1 server, the migration works -- sort of.

A few thngs were missng, as always happens with Migrate. But the biggest problem is that None of the New high rent features that you wanted from Netware 6.5 are installed on the "Pre-Migration" configuration. None of the iMmanager, none of the Web stuff is installed. You must install all of this seperately AFTER the migration is complete. I found this to be a very ugly process, and would not recommend it. In fact as soon as I get time, I am going to save the data and scrag the server that I set up with Migrate, do a complete fresh Install, and replace the data. (Not that much on it, so it will be little trouble)

I asked on this forum, and one of the regulars (Thanks, Marv!) suggested that I install a new 6.5 server with all the features that you want into your present tree. All users, groups, etc are already there. Then move the data and programs fron the old server to the new. I am finishing up a project that I did with this method, and I have a much more robust server with the new features installed.

Good luck!

I always consider what is currently running on the old server. If it's NW5.0 or NW4.11, I'm guessing that it's mostly just Files. In that case, it's easier to just insert the new server into the tree, put a replica on it, and copy files over. Use Trustbar to make copies of the trustee assignments, and use a tool like Beyond compare to do the transfer and make sure you have everything copied.

Setting up a Premigration server sucks. You are essentially installing a broken server from the start, and you have to then go in and fix everything later. That's why in your situation, I would recommend what I said earlier.

The migration wizard works better when you have more services running that rely on NDS and rely on the NDS object not changing. That's essentially what the migration wizard's purpose is. Take NDS off one server, plop it down on another so it looks as if nothing changed. More appropriate for large migrations, not simple server installs.

Let me second that. Trustbar would have saved me weeks of guessing who had what permissions.

As I understand you guys there might be a problem having a NW6.5 server with edir in the same tree as a NW5 server since that won´t support the right nds version ?

I considering installing NW 6 on the new server so I can keep the old NW5 server so I can phase it out of production.

Will it be easier installing a NW6 server in my case ?

I dont' have a problem mixing NDS versions as long as you keep it to a minimum and don't plan on keeping it that way forever. Also make sure you have the lastest patch for NDS for each server.

My advise...Make sure you do all the prechecks for installation of a nw6 server. We had 5 different versions of NDS at one point but by following the best practices we were able to escape unscathed.

My advise do your research first.
