Hi, I'm new to the linux scene but have been doing AIX adminsitration for a few years. Is there anything I need to worry about when installing Linux on a Raid 5 during the install process. This is just a test box that I'd like to get Linux on for Progress testing. The server is an IBM Netfinity, with a AIC-7895 SCSI, has 3 IDE disks of 9 gig each.

Does the distro of Linux you are using support the hardware you have?

From what I've read on the IBM site, its said Linux v.6.0 on all the Netfinity boxes, so i'm assuming v3.0 AS will work...so far so good, on disk #2...

I could do anything with the RAID5 though. It kept saying something about "you need 2 devices or drives" something like that to use RAID5....

It sounds like you might be getting bitten by linux' support for software RAID vs hardware RAID.

Software RAID is an artificial linkage between two or more "regular" drives in the chasis and vitualizing them using software based RAID to create RAID1 or RAID5 as a single virtual drive. This is why you are being asked for at least 2 devices.

Hardware RAID should, if the RAID card is compatible with your distribution, appear as a single physical device to the linux installer. Thus, I infer that since your problem above has arisen you are probably running a supported RAID device which is being recognized as just that - a single device.

Check yourself by doing the math on how much available space should appear from your hardware RAID. If you go to partition the device and the total space reflects your expectations then you're off to the races. If it looks like only one drive on your array was identified, then it's time to go driver hunting.

thanks for that tid bit. I does look like the RAID hardware is working fine, hence the one device and the total size is correct.
Issue, I can't seem to load the S3 86C755/86C785. The resolution only goes 800x600. It did a probe for both monitor and video card, i noticed the monitor wasn't the exact IBM model is chose, could the monitor be wrong which is why it can't go to 1024x768?

Could be, but 800 X 600 should allow the install. You can always change the resolution later.
