I'm looking into replacing my lab equipment (4000x6 running 12.1)with newer equipment and have been eyeing the 2600 and 1700 series routers. Anyone have any preference and why? Thanks in advance.

Keith

If this is for a lab and you want to rack mount then 2600 is best option as they are rack mountable. I would use the 2600 in a lab. One of the main reasons is the cost for memory upgrades. Flash for the 1700 series is a compact flash type and is usually kind of expensive even on Ebay. The 1700 does have fast ethernet built in though were the 2600 can only do 10 full duplex at best. The 1700 has an external power supply were the 2600 uses standard PC power cable with internal power supply. Either series would be good but I think I would go with the 2600 platform.

I'd prefer the 2600, too, because you have an NM slot available.

2600 can also do 802.1Q for vlans, and even the 10baseT can is you have 12.2 I S or later. 1720 cant do 802.1Q 1721 etc can with the right image.

2600 is not limited to 10baseT it depends on the model 2620 is 100, 2621 is 2x100. and All XM are FE but are expesive. Be carefull with 2600 as the non xm modules cant take a lot of the NM modules, for example nm-1e2w isnt compatable, it may be worth spending a bit xtra on a 3620 if you can or opt for a 2621.

Thanks for the Replies. 2600 does seem to be the perferred router of choice here. Guess it's time to shop.
