Hello,

I am trying to update my server infastructure. I had 2 servers that handled everything. the server1 had AD,DNS,DHCP,WSUS. server 2 had exchange and file sharing. I was having dns/dhcp problems with server1.

for my new setup. I want to have 3 servers with server2k3. have server1 only handle AD. server2 handle exchange/file sharing. have a new server3 to handle DNS,DHCP,WSUS.

here is what i've done so far. install server1 and AD. Do not install DNS/DHCP during install.

I join server2 and server3 to the domain and logged-in, but the log in frooze. I'm pretty sure it's dns issue. I have my IP manually setup so they are in the same subnet mask.

I want to know what i did wrong, or is this possible. this is i'm planning to do. install server1 with AD and dns/dhcp. add server2 and 3 to the domain. install their services. remove dns/dhcp on server1. will this option work? are there any other ways of doing this?

thanks,
ky

Yes that will work. You have to have DNS setup and working for AD to function. With DNS AD will NOT work.

Here is where i'm at now. I installed AD on server1 and than installed DNS/DHCP on server3.

currently my dns works and dhcp does not. server 3 will not let me authorize the dhcp server. it's asking me to get permission from AD. I've delegated trust from server3 in AD.

any ideas?

thanks,
ky

I changed my mind and remove DHCP off server3 and put it back on Server1 with AD. DHCP is fine now

My issue now is with DNS. I cant see the folders _mscdcs, _tcp, _udp and _sites. Aren't they suppose to my in my dns server?

what to do?

thanks, ky

Update. Got DNS working had to set DNS to dynamic for both unsecure and secure, since I don't have the server setup as a DC. Didn't want to install AD on it also. Any suggestions would be great if it's a good idea to do this, but I'll use it for now. Appreciate the input mcdenny. It's going to be a long night.
