I have a customer looking to get out of there CICS and get a new BCM 50..no problem. They also want to deploy IP sets at the executives homes...again no problem except the other quotes they have do not require any type of VPN to connect to the main office or the sets do VPN.

I have never had any success deploying IP sets without VPN. The IT tech does not want to deploy BSR222 to the execs homes nor do they want softphones, they want all 1100 series sets. Does anyone have any good suggestions or work arounds to satisfy what the customer wants?

FYI, I had suggested a BCM 50e R3.0 with a BSR222 at the 3 executives homes with VPN back to the main office.

I'd go with the same recommendation, either Nortel or any good vpn capable routers, and that's a Nortel requirement.
What does the IT tech want to install in the execs home for vpn tunnel?

He doesnt want to install anything other than the phone. They are being quoted on a Mitel and a Trixbox. The Mitel phones apparently have a VPN client and the Trixbox is going over a public network.

I didn't know Trixbox, usually for remote users with Mitel we install a Mitel Networks 6010 Teleworker Server, which reside on the public side. You could do the same with a Bcm400 and program Lan2 on the public side but it's not really recommended, Nortel prefers you use VPN base solutions.
How many phones do you need to install in total?

Its 3 remote phones right now with the possiblity of 10. I have setup a BCM 400 with LAN 2 on the public side and have been able to get the remote IP phones able to register and make outbound calls and calls to digital sets but not to local IP sets. The Mitel dealer is putting in a Teleworker server. Is there maybe some sort of Session Border Controller that will work with the BCM similar to the Teleworker server?

I have the exact same application BCM50e with 5 BSR222's and 5 1140E's I cannot establish VPN tunnels back to the BCM from The Execs Houses. Very Frustrated If You find a way of completing this Please keep me in mind.
I'm seriously looking to get a way from Nortel My Issues have gone on for about 4 weeks now. It's become a joke.

I've set up a few of these now in the configuration that you're looking at and quite frankly, I find them to be ridiculously complicated for what we are trying to accomplish. For one, they all have to be on a different subnet for the tunnel to be established and they can't be connected behind an existing router in people's homes. When they first came out you couldn't even split tunnel them so all the internet traffic went down the pipe as well and if you were trying to talk on the phone at the same time, well forget it.

We have a Mitel system in our office and I have an ip set in my house. Couldn't be easier. Just brought it home and plugged it in to my Linksys router. Came up in about 30 seconds with no problem at all.

I have a couple more locations waiting for these BSRs but I'm trying to get the customer to just use their own vpn clients to establish the connection back to the office. As long as that connection has a path to the BCM (or CS1K) the set should ome up right away. The only drawback is that the set would only work when the computer is vpn'd in but that shouldn't be a big problem if they're not there anyway.

I don't understand why Nortel has to make everything so damn difficult!

I completely agree. Well I think I'm going to actually recommend the SCS 500. You can purchase it with a Session Border Controller (similar to the Mitel Teleworker Server) to allow users to connect to the site through the public side. Thanks everyone for the input, I'll let you know how I make out.

Or download and install a sipXecs (Google sipXecs). It's free and identical to the SCS500. In the new release (sometime Mar 09) it will include onboard NATing for home/remote users.

You can use Polycom SIP phones at the remote locations.
