I have installed XP on a Dell P667 which was previously Win98. Sequence of upgrade:
Set the bios to boot first from the CD-rom.
Start Win98 and then shut down to dos
C:\Deltree c: - yes to all files except command.com and the two system files.
Reboot from the XP upgrade CD and install XP
Everything is fine, however at boot up the machine obviously runs the boot.ini file which gives me the choice of booting to 98 or XP. Attempting to boot to 98 fails - obviously I deleted (most of) the operating system.
Clearly one or all of the three files remaining on the system when XP was installed created this situation. I can set the default 30 delay in the boot.ini file to a lower number and hardly notice the message, so really this is nothing more than a minor annoyance and my desire to understand XP better?
Any clarification would be appreciated.
