I just installed Mandrake Linux 8.2 on a system that is networked to a Windows XP system. I guess the network went through ok, because I was able to hit the internet afterward, which is on the Xp machine. I was wondering how can I view shared files on the XP system onto the Linux system. I also wanted to know IF there is anyway possible to install MSN 8 on the system with all of my settings that are on the XP system.

You can view and access Shared folders that exist on the XP box from the Linux Machine. You will have to use SAMBA to do this.

Not sure about the question of MSN 8.
Can you Use MSN as your ISP while you are running linux?
Based on what you have said about the way you have things setup, sounds like your XP box would need to act as a router. You would need to make sure you were sharing the internet connection. Then you would need to setup the Linux box with the correct DNS, IP and Gateway settings for one. You would also have to figure out if you are going to be using DHCP or a static IP address on the Linux box. I don't know much about XP and internet connection sharing so you may want to check the Microsoft sites on that one.

It is good to read samba doc

Anyway, to get you started

The samba client is standard in Mandrake 8.2

create a directory /mnt/samba

to mount a share called open on XP box called HYDRA ip 192.168.1.1

mount -t smbfs -o ip=192.168.1.1,username=xxxxx,password=xxxxx //hydra/open /mnt/samba

Go to /mnt/samba and all XP files will be there.

To automount it at boot set an appropriate entry in /etc/fstab
