New Install Issue

I just built a new computer and installed xp pro on it. The o/s did not find the legacy NIC so I dropped in a realtek pci. I can reach other compters on the network and the internet using firefox. However, every time I open IE it errors and closes. It does not matter if it's opening by the icon, windows update or ie tab in firefox! Also, every time I click on a disk in the dvd-rom it reboots! Any ideas?

or if in windows, try sfc /scannow from Start-Run

What is sfc? is the command "sfc /scannow"?

I always reboot after running it. Ive seen it run from 10 mins to half hour, could run longer.

im just doing a clean install. pisses me off, these are all brand new parts and I have never had a problem with this MSDN disk.

Ok, I ran the scan and it completed. I tried to open IE and it bombed out! Here is the error message...

I have an sp2 disk that I am now installing.

Maybe not...sp2 setup is erroring out. "Service Pack 2 Setup cannot updata a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack2, or vice versa."

I'm thinking this is just an MSDN thing. Any ideas on why I am still having issues with IE?

NEW system - run a MEMTEST, first...

also check the seating of the mainboard, it may be shorting out, since you say that it reboots when you attempted to access the DVD...

another thing when it BSOD's write down the CODE, it will help in troubleshooting...

This mornings reinstall fixed the issue with seeing the dvd (or its just the MSDN disk). It seems that the only true problem is with IE.

Did you install all the drivers that came with the mobo disk?

Can you go ahead and upgrade to ie 7?
