I now have Microsoft XP Professional installed on my Dell Dimension 3000 machine (it was not smooth and I want to re-due the whole thing but I can't). Prior (old 40Gig drive)came up the same upon boot and now when I boot the computer with a new 300Gig Drive I still get the following message;

Secondary Drive 1 not found
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

The boot sequence is as follows:

1. Hard-Disk Drive c:
2. IDE CD-ROM Device

In the Setup I have the following drive configuration:

Primary Master Drive Hard Drive
Primary Slave Drive OFF
Secondary Master Drive CD-ROM Device
Secondary Slave Drive Unknown Device

IDE Drive UDMA....... On

When I select F1 the XP Pro comes up, but is not right and I screwed up the Administration and password stuff, it is also in a SAFE MODE look which is normal.

What is going on in the boot sequence? Why does the machine return these messages? Can I configure the machine to get rid of this " Secondary Drive 1 not found " without the F1 prompt to continue?

Regards, Steve

Have you checked the jumpers for the 300GB drive? Sounds like it needs to be set on "SLAVE". The directions are either embossed or labeled on the drive. Check that first. Windows will not see a drive until it is formatted, if you get the BIOS to see the 300GB drive, then, in Windows, right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management, initialize and format the drive.

Tony,
I was not clear in my first post. I now have only 1 hardrive in the computer (300 Gig). I had the same message with my 40 Gig drive for the last two weeks upon booting it. I don't believe that it is a "Slave" issue.

The 300 Gig drive was virtually new however it did have a small amount of data on it. With that in mind a did format it (with seemingly good success) prior to booting on the New MS XP Pro softeware I bought yesterday afternoon. Go figure . . ..

Message "Secondary Drive 1 not found" corresponds with Setup message "Secondary Slave Drive Unknown Device".

What do you have connected on the cable along with your CD-ROM drive? Check the jumpering on both devices. Set one to master, the other slave, or both to cable select. If there is no device, try setting secondary slave drive to NONE or OFF in setup.

All is fixed and I appreciate everyones help. I had several things going on and they are now working ! Issues are now closed.

cobra111,

Could you please post your procedure and how you obtained success? It could do myself or a future Tek-Tipper a huge favour, and it is considered important to the community to report back with your solution. Hey, you might even get a star for your own question!
