i have just bought a new WD 40GB hard disk. but i used it with my old k6 system and the bios could not detect the hdd. it just detect my primary drive forever and nothing happens. could it be a bad disk or the bios is too old to support a new hdd?

Your BIOS is too old. You will need to replace the bios or motherboard. It is cheaper to replace the motherboard.

After tax and shipping getting a new bios will cost over $80 plus time to get it.

Cheaper suggesstion. Go purchase a Promise TX133 card.
Put your 40 gig on the first channel and disable the on board primary ide or use it for cdrom/dvd, etc. devices.
If the 40 gig drive is configured to to boot, then it will become your boot device. The promise card is about $33-$50 depending on where you buy it.
