I keep hearing about Partner R8 -- the release of which seems to be imminent. Has anyone heard or does anybody know about new features, enhancements with R8?

Some past releases have been sort of "anti-climactic". I'm hoping there's something worth being excited about!

I am familiar with the techniques for making cable assemblies. It takes a little planning, trial and error to get it right. For the legs I use clear PVC tubing and the only part I use shrink tubing is the butt area of the 25 pair jacket that meets the leg tubing. The clear PVC tubing I use is not the shrink type. Newark sells it by the roll. For the Partner design I use 18" legs and the legs are numbered and I have a connection sheet that identifies the leads/plugs, etc. For the ACS 509 I need to design a new version.

If Avaya eventually redesigns Partner hardware so it resembles the IP Office lineup, it would well be worth considering using Amphenol connectors for telephones.

While the modular connectors were helpful in upgrading from Merlin Classic systems, I suspect that very few Partner installations have telephones plugged directly into the control cards. Most installations involve some sort of structured arrangement and this is where Amphenol/25 pair cables really shine.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

In my prior post the Amphenol connectors would be used on front end modules, not the phones themselves. [purpleface]

I like the plugs on the Partners. 90% of my customers can swap their own stations that way. Ditto for the IP500 if you have a 30-sta digital module in it. I use it as a selling factor for clients - ie Vodavi is cheaper, but you can't plug and play phones. Most of the time on new installs we patch panel everything - that way we can steal data locs for phones if we need to and expand data capability with switches - just my opinion...

In reference back to the Partner ACS R8 release, I just came across an Avaya Pre-Sale Technical Support Group news letter from December 2003. There was a question about PRI for the Partner:

"When will PRI be available on the Partner T1 module?" It said, "When Partner ACS R7 is released in 2004, a firmware upgrade will be available, expanding the number of channels on the T1 from 16 to 24; however it will not support PRI. PRI is scheduled for the Partner ACS R8 release in 2005."

The author listed is Ronad E. Rogers of Avaya.

Well it looks like that never happened!! I guess all the bugs in R7 side tracked those enhancements, but I wonder what happened in R8? Still NO expanded DS1 or PRI!!
