Hi there,

I am after some advice on replacing a domain controller. Our exisiting one has been having some problems and it is a bit old. Its currently running windows 2000 server patched up to date.

I have got a new server that i would like to run as a domain controller side by side and then eventually decommission the older one. The new server is windows 2003 standard edition R2.

I was thinking that all i needed to do was add the server to the domain and run dcpromo and move the machine in the active directory domain controller folder.

I then thought that i may need to upgrade the schema on the existing win 2000 dc so that it is up to date.

Is this along the right lines? Any tips or past experiences gratefully received.

Thanks

Pretty much just join it to the domain. You will have to run a util on the 2003 CD (from the 2000 server) that updates the schema. I don't remember exactly what's involved, but the error you get when you try to join the 2003 box is pretty clear. You might have to look it up on the MS KB, but you only need to run one or two commands on the 2000 DC.
