I've just built a new W2K server domain controller and run on it DHCP and DNS for internal use. I cannot get the server to see itself in the domain- or the laptop I connect to it- by resource name. Connecting to either by static IP address is no problem. \\192.168.0.5 takes me to the server. Thanks in advance.

Make sure the server is pointing to itself as the primary DNS server. I would also suggest that you verify that all the appropriate SRV records were created during installation.

first, if you have another server..get dhcp off the domain controller, as dhcp is not supported on a domain controller. If you call microsoft ever, they will likely have you do this. I have done that config before when limited to one server in an office however...but it is not good practice.

mpreiss is correct however about DNS

If this is the only DC, it must be pointed to itself and itself only for DNS. If this is a replica DC, it must be pointed to the PDC as preferred and itself as alternate. In addition, you need to go into advanced tcp/ip properties and ensure enable netbios over tcp/ip is on(default is on in win2k), on the DNS tab, be sure use primary and connection specific dns suffixes radio button is marked, use parent suffixes.... is checked just below that...register this connections addresses in DNS should also be checked...everything else is blank...with the exception of the DNS server addresses of course.

almost got a paragraph there :)

mpriess,
Thanks for your reply. I am not the most knowledgable when it comes to intricate DNS. So please bear with me. I do know that the SOA and NS records are there and seemingly correct. The ip address listed is the correct. When I do a nslookup on the server name it comes back with an IP address associated with the default gateway. If I do the same lookup from the laptop it has the correct ip address associated with what should be the DNS server as well as the domain controller. Where do I look to see in a w2k server that the DNS server is pointing to itself. Thanks in advance again.

ADgod,
Thank you very much for your input. It was the NETbios over tcp\ip setting in the tcp\ip properties that finally did it. It is all up and working fine. Thanks to both you and mpriess for your time and effort.
