I have a brand new computer with:
ECS P4VXMS motherboard
Intel Celeron 1.7Ghz
512 MB ram
40 GB hard drive
24x CD-Rom

My computer freezes
I can't even instal windows 98
my drive formated, then the windows instalation gui came up, it froze.
now, it doesn't get past bios.
the fans work,
what can be the problem????

Can you get into the bios and find the choice for either Default or Safe settings? You're sure your Cpu fan is connected to the correct header? We are always looking for new members at our computer forums: Please come join our community too.

Enter cmos setup and check your settings.
Try "Fail Safe"
Also check your connections.

Yes yes, I tried that, It didn't work...
what else could be wrong,

You may have "Halt on all errors" set in the BIOS and something as simple as a font not loading correctly will make a stop.
If it'll let you, boot to Safe Mode with F8 just before the Windows splash screen and choose bootlog.txt.
When it fails, boot to Safe Mode again and look for the file on your C drive. Look for failure and there's your problem.

All new components? is the ram 1 stick of 512 or two 256's?
Either take out one stick and try again with the remainder or if just one stick swap out, if you can.
Set bios to default settings.
Memory is the single most unreliable component in a new system build. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

You don't have any problem. You just have to wait during the windows setup GUI. Since you have only 24x CD-ROM it obviously reads the CD slowly...so just be patient. It is better that you get 52x CD-ROM.

OK..now need to solve the problem with 24x cd-rom drive.
--> Create a Start UP disk from some other computer
--> Now you can copy the whole win98 folder from the CD onto the computer. This will also take time but then later while running the setup your computer won't freeze since it will then run from your hard disk. Still you have to be patient while the dos copies all the files onto your hard disk..since there will be no gui it will be faster..i guess
--> now run the setup.exe from the hard disk and your computer wont freeze

Ok, first, in case you missed it, I haven't been able to install windows yet so I cant boot to safe mode,
I'll try the boot-disk first, then try to swap memory, I'll let you know how it goes when its done thanks :)

Clear the CMOS too. At the same time you are in there, re-check ALL connections. Next remove all that you can, extra cards, hard drive and all but 1 RAM stick. If it still doesn't work, swithc the RAM with a different one.

If you bought this thing somewhere, take it back to them.

Sean.

If the RAM isn't working, you'll not get any thing on the screen. It will be completely blank. Now if it's not then try the start up disk first it's easy and I think it'll work.

PALHELLO ONCE AGAIN U R RIGHT, BUT ONE OF HIS MEMORY MODULE MIGHT BE GOING BAD. OR U HAVE A DEFECTED MOTHERBOARD
SINCE IT NEW MB,DOESN'T MEAN IT WILL WORK. BELIEVE ME. OR BAD CPU. CHECK THE PINS
GOOD LUCK

OH YEAH CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY, MAKE SURE IS 300 WATTS.

I HAVE ASUS P4S533-E. IN ORDER TO STAY STABLE. I NEEDING A 300 WATTS PS.
CRAZY RIGHT.

Is it possible that the heatsink wasn't seated correctly? This could cause everything that you are describing. Don't forget that some heatsinks have that little tab of plastic that covers a thermal pad (or compound)...might be worth checking for.

Do you get anything on the monitor at all? Mudskipper
