I had this email aswell and initially panicked as i have BSCI and CIT to go!

But you can still take the "old" exams until 31st Dec this year.

MCP,CCA,CCNA, Net+, Half CCNP...

You have to register for the "old" exams before 15th November though. I'm in a similar situation, I just have the CIT left to go.

Below is an excerpt from an email I received from Cisco after I raised an inquiry with them (cos I wanted to make absolutely sure):

"You have until November 15, 2006 to register for the current CCNP exam(s) and you will have until December 31, 2006 to take the current CCNP exam(s). If you fail to take the 642-831 CIT on or before December 31, 2006, you will be required to take the 642-845 ONT exam."

Regards, Graham

Good thing I'm shooting for the CCIE.

Techkiwi -
Thank you very much for this crucial information! This should be a prominent place in the forum - every CCNP candidate needs to know this!

This drastically changes things - it means after Nov. 14, you can only take a test ONE MORE time. Usually, if you fail, you can study hard and take it again in a couple weeks. If you take the CIT on Nov. 16 and fail, you will NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE IT AGAIN!

Sorry to rant; I am very upset that Cisco has not posted this information. Had I not run across this thread, I would never have known!

Forgive my ranting, but here is something EVERY person currently working on the CIT should consider:

Let's imagine it's November 15 (or after) and you flunk the CIT test. What now? You have to take the ONT test instead, but how will you study for it? There are no books out for the ONT exam yet - they won't be out for months! How will you study? Your old books are useless - it's a new tests! You are screwed!

The new books are out and available through authorized Cisco curriculum delivered by learning partners. I am reviewing them right now so I can update my instructor status to the new curricula. If you can't wait for the other publishers to get caught up, find a Cisco Learning Partner and train there. Cisco released all this information as of August 15, 2006.

I'd suggest you get the CIT attempted so you can have another shot before the end of December if you don't pass. Frankly, I think the CIT is the easiest of the CCNP exams especially if you've done a lot of troubleshooting.

My two cents.

Cluebird -

Thank you kindly for your 2 cents - I wish to ask how easy people find the new CIT exam. I have read vastly different opinions on the subject. May I ask when you took your exam?

The following URL reveals even more about ccnp changes:

Of particular interest is:
"The CCNP certification will still require four exams; candidates may take either version of BSCI and BCMSN, while any two of the following exams will satisfy the other half of the certification requirement: BCRAN, CIT, ISCW, or ONT."

However, keep in mind, this url is on necacad - it applies to Cisco Academy students. If you aren't one, better start cramming now!

November 15th is loads of time!

I think it's just the kick up the backside a lot of people (such as myself) need to pick up the books again and finish their CCNP.

I've been cramming for 2 weeks and i've got CIT tomorrow. if i fail, then i've still got a lot of time left to retake.

No point wasting time moaning, Cisco aren't going to change their policies because of a few of us. The CCNP does need updating: there is a lot of stuff that is mostly obsolete, the world moves on and we have to keep up.

just my 2 pennies.

MCP,CCA,CCNA, Net+, Half CCNP...

helpdeskdan,

As an instructor, I have to take the most current form of exam to maintain my status. I've taken all the CCNP exams at least three times (most recently 2004 in the current versions) and I'll take all four of the new ones within the next two months. If I have students complaining too much about exam difficulty, I'll take the exam myself just to verify I'm teaching at the appropriate level, so I take a lot of Cisco tests as do all the authorized training instructors. Of all the Cisco exams I've taken, the CCIE R&S was the hardest, the CIT the easiest. But, I have lots of troubleshooting experience.

Let us know how the CIT exam goes, NettableWalker - I've got to sit it soon...

techkiwi -

Who did you write at Cisco? I have a question, but I do not know where to send it. Cisco Academy students have an extra year to take the CIT exam. I was a CIT Academy student, but it was around a year ago. My former teacher seems to think that the netacad rules apply to me, but I remain dubious - it sounds as if it applies only to current students. I'm an alumni, not a student.

I suppose November 15th should be plenty of time to pass, but I am curious nonetheless what the answer to this question is.

Go here:

They have a database of questions and answers, and you can contact them to ask a question. Response time is pretty good, I usually get an answer within a day or so and I'm in New Zealand so probably posting my questions in the middle of the night for them.

Thanks techkiwi!

Nutshell - I asked them, waited, finally they responded "We don't know. We'll forward it on to netacad." No answer from netacad. :-(

At this point, with the exception of students who are currently enrolled in CIT class, I would reccomend that everybody aim to have their CIT by Nov. 15.

HEY AM NEW OIN THE FORUM, I WILL BE WRITING MY CCNA EXAMS THIS NOVEMBER, I HAVE READ VEY WELL FOR IT AND I THINK I AM READY, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO ASK YOUR ADVICE SINCE YOU PEOPLE ARE MORE ADVANCED,

WHAT ARE THE TOPICS YOU THINK THAT I SHOULD REALLY STUDY,

DURING THE EXAMINATIONS, HOW MANY SIMULATIONS ARE WE GOING TO DO ??

ALOS I HEARD THAT IF YOU WRITE CCNA, YOU WILL HAVE TO WRITE CCNP WITHIN A TWO YEAR INTERVAL, IS THAT TRUE

I finally did get a response from netacad@custhelp.com. More reassurance than anything; I shouldn't need the extra time. If it applies to me, it should apply to any netacad student.

Dan,

Thank you for contacting the Cisco Networking Academy Support Desk.

Yes this does apply to you also. If you have not yet taken the CCNP Certification Exams, you can receive a Voucher to take the exams after they have been retired. You will need to submit an incident request a Voucher for the CCNP Exams and include the following information:

- Academy Connection ID :
- Username :
- Testing Center (Prometric or VUE) :
- Academy ID :
- Academy Name :
- Name of Exams you need the Voucher for :

Please let us know if you have any further questions, comments, or concerns.

Thank you,

Kenny A.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but perhaps somebody out there will find this useful. I certainly did. The plot thickens for netacad students.

Nutshell: As before, if you were a netacad student, you can get a voucher to take the test after the expiration date. However, getting a voucher is proving difficult - I'm still trying to get mine. (Though I sincerely hope and plan to not have to use it) Once you get it, there are conditions!
1. Can only be used once. (Apparently you can apply for another one)
2. Can't be used till after Jan 04. Fail on the Nov 15th and you have to wait till Jan 04 to sign up again! Absurd! (I am double checking this)
3. Voucher is Prometric only! I live down the street from a Vue center, but it's a long drive to a Prometric testing center!

<>
I appreciate your patience while we researched this incident and apologize for the delay.

You can take the CCNP exams as needed until 12/31/2006. On 12/31/1006 the following CCNP exams will be retired:

- 642-891 Exam
- 642-821 Exam
- 642-811 Exam
- 642-801 Exam
- 642-831 Exam

You will then need to contact the Support Desk to request a Voucher to take one of the above exams. The Voucher can only be used for one exam and only once. If you wishes to take more then one exam or take an exam multiple times then the Voucher Team will supply you with additional Voucher numbers. Registration with the Voucher for the retired CCNP exams will begin on 01/04/2007 and the last day to take the CCNP exams will be on 12/31/2007. You will only be able to use the Voucher number to register with Prometric Testing Centers. You will need to call Prometric directly to register with the Voucher number.

Please note that the Voucher will only enable you to register for the exam and will not provide any discount.

Please update this incident with the exam number that you wish to take and our Voucher Team will issue a Voucher for this exam.

Once again thank you for contacting the Cisco Networking Academy Support Desk and please let us know if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns.

(Sigh) Ok, no way around it - only Prometric vouchers.

However, the November 15th is in question. Netacad has heard nothing about it, obviously. Techkiwi - who again sent you that letter? Do you have a copy?

I will only look into this a little further - I plan to pass by Nov. 15. And, if I don't, I'll study for one of the new tests. (Not sure where I'd order a manual..)

<>
Dear Dan Schmidt,

Thank you for updating this incident.

Unfortunately, the Voucher Team has only been provided Vouchers for the Prometric testing center. When an exam is being retired it is the decision of the testing centers if they wish to allow Academy Connection Students to take the retired exam after this date. Only Prometric agreed to allow Students to take the retired CCNP exams.

I apologize for the chose of words. You can take the CCNP exams without a Voucher before they expire on 12/31/2006. Unfortunately, the Vouchers that the Voucher Team was provided will not be valid until 01/04/2006.

I have forward your request for the 642-821 exam to the Voucher Team. Once the Voucher Team has reviewed your request they will issue you a Voucher for this exam.

We apologize for any inconvenience or hardship this may have caused. Please let us know if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns.

Sincerely,

Rhea A.

Doesn't sound like you're having much luck!

Unfortunately I know nothing about Netacad, I've done everything by self-study with one week-long course (BCMSN) which work paid for. So you're on your own there. However I have seen the November 15th deadline (for booking the exam) and the December 31 deadline (for sitting the exam) mentioned in several places now, so I think you're safe in working to those dates.

Below is the question I sent in and the answer I received. I've asked a couple of questions by going to:

and clicking on the "Contact Us" tab. You then fill in your email address, a subject and your question. I've used this facility two or three times and had good quick responses, so would definitely recommend giving it a go.

Dear Graham,

Thank you for contacting the Cisco Career Certifications and Training Team.

After reviewing your Tracking System record, I found that you only need to take and pass the 642-831 CIT exam to achieve the CCNP certification.

You have until November 15, 2006 to register for the current CCNP exam(s) and you will have until December 31, 2006 to take the current CCNP exam(s). If you fail to take the 642-831 CIT on or before December 31, 2006, you will be required to take the 642-845 ONT exam.

If you have any further questions, or require additional assistance, please click the hyperlink above to update your case.

Customer (Graham Mundell) 08/15/2006 02:35 PM

I have already sat and passed BSCI 642-801 (19 May 2005) BCMSN 642-811 (19 September 2005) and BCRAN 642-821 (4 May 2006). Am I still able to sit CIT and achieve CCNP qualification? If so, what is the last day I can sit CIT?

Thank you

Good luck!
