A friend is opening a pub/restaurant and wants a POS system and is on a tight budget. He needs 2 registers and a machine for orders to be sent to the cook with credit card interface. Any ideas or websites would be appreciated.

You get what you pay for... investing in a quality system eventually will yield its return in more captured revenue. Stay away from cheap systems that seem too good to be true. Aloha, Dinerware and possibly Digital Dining are about the only ones that are worth considering anymore. Remember to factor in whether or not the data can be extracted by other apps... this WILL make a difference in the very near future.

That was my next question: what type of databases do these programs that you mentioned use. In the future i would like to extract the info and import them to an accounting system.

squirrel -- you could track down a used classic system (DOS based), it is powerful and does the basics -- only down side is it is a DOS environment. You could get Squirrel that is windows based (SQL database) -- very powerful.

Compris makes a good Quick Service POS System.
They work well with kitchen Video Systems and Kitchen Recept Printers.

There Software isnt very good for Table Service Though, There backoffice software is very good and there reports are the best ive seen.

The Software is very pricey however beacuse the company is a NCR Buissness Partner,

Compris missed getting into McDonalds by a hair. Mcd's found it to be unstable compared to their current dos systems. but then again, what windows based system is?
