Alright, i'm building a new system and i'm having some problems. I got the motherboard and everything installed ok, but when i turn it on it runs REALLY slow (just entering the bios takes 30 seconds if not more), and it looks like it's only picking the processor up at 200 mhz. I tried moving the ratio on the processor up in the bios, but it still looks like it's only at 200mhz and it's still running slow.

anyone have any ideas?

200MHz? Are you sure you're not looking at the Frontside Bus speed?

What's the make/model of the motherboard? What CPU are you using? The more details you provide, the easier it will be for others to help out...

I'm starting to think i might be as well but i'm not sure. When the computer starts up before it starts recognizing the ide drives, it says CPU speed 200mhz. I just assumed it was telling me what the chip was running at.

Anyway, everything is brand new. Gigabyte K8ns, Athlon 64 3000+, socket 939. AGP video card, i think it's a ati radeon 9330, 256 ram ddr, 80gb maxtor hard drive.

The processor not running at the right speed was my first thought, just because of how slow it was running.

On Gigabyte motherboards, you have to hit CTRL-F1 to see advanced features in the BIOS.

Once you do that, you should see more on your CPU and memory speed settings. If you can't set them to where they need to be, try resetting your BIOS settings back to the default. Also comb through your manual for the jumpers on your motherboard to make sure they're all set correctly.

Errr, The gigabyte K8NS board is a 754, having had that mobo myself. I found it to be a touch tempermental with the BIOS it comes with and so did a friend who bought one the other day. Also 256mb of ram, your machine will run slow if you're running XP. You're really wanting 512mb min nowadays. £35 from aria (and sure it a bit cheaper than that too!).

carpetbelly,
Good points, but regardless of the amount of RAM, it shouldn't take 30 seconds to get into the BIOS you would think...

you say that but mine sometimes took that long and it was fully tested to be working properly after being sent back...

and when I flashed a newer bios onto it then I stopped having that problem. Good board other than that and my onboard SATA controller sometimes would detect the drives on it and sometimes wouldnt which then also meant it took a while to get into the BIOS even after the flashing of a new one.

ok, well maybe flashing the BIOS was needed to correct an issue unrelated to the CPU and RAM. Who knows?

In any case, I've worked with many Gigabyte motherboards in the past (not this model), and haven't seen this before. Must have just been a stroke of bad luck affecting only this model!

I know... I love gigabyte boards and have only ever had good results from them. Strange that both me and a friend had issues but then we both run 3 sticks of non branded DDR3200 512mb sticks and the same AMD64 3000+ chip. So handy for testing things out when we need a benchmark. Not so much anymore now I have changed mobos.
