Hi(I'm not a programmer - unless you count MSAccess attempts) - I'm new to XP (home) - Just added XPhome to a 2 HD system - 20gig(c: win 98se) and 60 gig(ATA133)(d and e: with partition magic) with XP home on D: The board is an intel board with ATA100.

I picked up the WesternDigital 120JB and an IT(gigabyte?) PCI ata133 card.

The card is recognized by XP. When I plug in the Drive - the system hangs at the choice of XP or "windows"
It isn't formatted yet.
The drive seems to work - it gets very warm with the power on.
What should I do next?? I thought of plugging the drive into the CDrom connector and formatting it there - ??

Thanks in advance.

Yo bro if i understand it correctly you would like to have a dual boot OS machine. If yes it is better to reformat your new drive and use your XP Home cd to boot for you. Try checking if during the installation process there is an option for you to reformat your new drive and at the same time create a dual boot system while maintaining your old win 98 intact.

Well, I'm in the process of moving all my programs and data to XP . Then I'll remove 98. How do you remove 98?? just delete or reformat the disk with Win 98 on it?
BUT - the big problem was that the new Disk the 120WesternDigital caused the system to hang on booting.

So you've already got a 98/XP dual boot (on C: and D:). You could try sharing the second on board IDE slot between the CD and new drive. You say it hangs at the menu (XP or Windows) screen - so you can't select either? Or have you just tried XP (if so, try 98). So does it hang before you try to select - or only after you select XP?

I'm wondering if the new controller/drive has usurped the XP disk's position as second drive in the system - relegating it to 'disk 3' - which would mean the boot.ini entry for it would no longer be valid.

Yo arthure I have one question what type of setup did you use for your Xp(Fat32 or NTFS) if NTFS try sticking with it and remove your 98. In the past people I encounter with Dual systems one with Fat32 and one with NTFS most likely one system would hang, well thats always the worst thing that could happen.

Knowledge is a gift from God sharing it with friends and strangers, make you a better person, inside and outside.

Both are Fat 32.
The system hangs whether I try to boot to XP or to Windows98.

Cable the drive into one of the CD cables and the system boots to XP but the drive is not recognized - a bad drive??
I haven't used the Card to run one of the other running HDs or CDRoms - should I and what would I learn???
damn! this is frustrating.

Well - I "see" the drive in XP's device manager if I hook the cable up to one of the CDRom 's cables (instead of the CDRom). But I can't see the drive in MyComputer to format it..... hmmm maybe I'll load Partition Magic and see what it finds..... Perhaps there's a problem with the PCI ATA 133 (RAID) card.... A removeable drive is found - I'm not sure if that's my USB Compact Disk Reader of THIS new drive - I'll check the forums on HDs seen as Removeable's.

Any Ideas for me?? thanks

In XP, you need to partition the drive in Disk Management (run diskmgmt.msc - you can format here too) before it will appear in explorer.

In Tek Tips i saw a response to an NT question referring to Disk Management - I found it in XP partitioned and formatted that partition (Primary, incase i wanted to load an OS).... XP can see the drive IF i hook it up NOT on the new PCI/Raid controller. I can only set the Controller for Normal - not stripe nor mirror since there's only one disk - I EVEN tried hooking up two disks to the card so there could be RAID (set to stripe) but it still froze.
Any ideas before I buy a replacement PCI ATA 133 card? (This one seemed to be the Gigabyte IT8212 card)
more thanks to everyone who's been helpful.
