Just set up a new Exchange 2003 server on a virgin domain (2003). I just got the MX records pointing to the server today and its resolving. I've made the changes to the Default Routing Policy that was needed.

I made the inside domain a .local, but of course the outside is a .com, but that shouldnt matter.

I CAN send out fine, just nothing is coming in. I can telnet to the server on port 25 and get the appropriate response - from the INSIDE. But, outside of my firewall (PIX515) I CAN connect but I get a bunch of stars and a few 200's...then more stars. I have ports 110 open on the PIX.

I am have went down the steps a hundred times and cant figure out whats stopping the incoming mail. I've even made Cname entries in my inside DNS for the server (it sees the alias exactly what its suppose to be on the outside).

Any help would be SO MUCH Appreciated! This is all I have left to do and I'm done!

Thank you Guys/Gals

Jim S.

I realized that, wasnt thinking! DOH! I turned off the fixup command on the PIX and can converse with Exchange, but mail still not flowing inbound ?

:(

Can you telnet to the Exchange server on port 25 and get a response?
If so, can you send an email using the command line?
If not it is Exchange that is causing the problem.

I'd suspect the Pix config otherwise.

Yes, I can telnet to it and get a response. I dont know how to send an email into it from there though :(

telnet exchangeserver 25
helo oi.com
rcpt to: youremailaddress@yourdomain.com
mail from: test@test.com
DATA
subject: Test
This is a test
.

Just type the above in.

Ok, I typed up a message on the telnet session with my server (from the outside)... it arrived in my mailbox on the server.

I ping the MX record IP adress and get the correct name and everything for it... wonder why its not making the trip?

DOH!

Instead of using the Exchange here (at this office) i tried AOL to send ...here is the response back (non delivery)

Action: failed
Status: 5.1.2
Remote-MTA: DNS; XXXXX.XXXXXXXX.com
Last-Attempt-Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 14:01:22 -0500 (EST)

BUT - the Address for the Remote-MTA i CAN ping by name, so the Internet DNS servers KNOW the Name and IP. Now I'm really confused.

Thanks for your help! It is so much appreciated

Jim
