Never download java applets

I have IE 6 on Win2K professional, with a 1.4.1 Java Runtime environment, but when prompted to download a java applet for a page I accidently clicked on the "Never download" option. Anyone know where in the registry I can reset this option, so that I can start using java applets again?

I've tried re-installing both JVM and IE 6 with no luck ... when it says "Never" it seems to really mean it!

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security > highlight Internet > Custom Level > scroll down to Microsoft VM, Java Permissions, make sure it is not disabled. Next, scroll down to Scripting and make sure these three options, especially Java, are enabled.
Post back if no joy...

I have Medium Safety set for Java Permissions in the Security tab and all three scripting options are enabled.

It's been driving me nuts, cos I can't remember exactly how the dialogue box was worded and can't find anything that would disable the downloading of the applets in the registry.

In a pinch, I'd go to Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Settings > View Objects (right click on this screen if you're not in "Details" mode), right click on Java and remove it. You can also pull this off via Contol Panel > Add/Remove Programs, I believe...I've just always done it the other way...
Once uninstalled, go to: and pull down a fresh install, follow through, and see if this rectifies the situation.

Thanks for you help on this, but I've completed re-installed the JVM a couple of times. I've also gone back to an IE 5.5 setting and upgraded to 6 again ... I may have to trash the IE 5.5 so that I have no IE settings and install from scratch.

Well...try this, then...from Microsoft:

1. To Allow All Unsigned Applets
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click Custom Level.
Under Java Permissions, click Custom, click Java Custom Settings, and then click Edit Permissions.
Set "Run Unsigned Content" to Run in Sandbox or Enable, and then click OK until all open dialog boxes are closed.

2. To Allow Unsigned Applets Only the Right to Connect Back to the Originating Server
Close all browser windows.
Run Regedit.exe on the Zonedon.reg file in the System32 folder to turn on the advanced Java zone settings editor.
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the Security tab.
Click Custom Level.
Under Java Permissions, click Custom, click Java Custom Settings, and then click Advanced Edit.
Under Unsigned Permission, click Edit.
Go through all of the tabs and disable everything except the non-file URL connect access option on the Network tab and (if you need to run applets from file: URL pages) the access to file URL codebase option on the File tab.
Save your changes, and then close all of the dialog boxes.

Thanks for the assistance. I still haven't got this working. I think we're getting too low-level on how the plug-in/applets function here. My issue is that because of that one stupid dialogue box, no java applets get loaded into my browser ... even if they are my local applets.

I think I'm going to have to roll back my IE 6 to 5.5, remove 5.5, then remove the JVM and re-install the lot. Joy!

DomPedro,
You were clear on describing the problem, but not what you've tried since we've posted these suggestions. Carr's last suggestion should resolve it or at least point you in the right direction. The dialog box prompt you received manipulates settings that can be found in carr's post.

There's some screen shots and explanations here:

Finally, you could probably get away with the tedious task of rolling back IE, uninstalling it, then reinstalling IE 6. However, it might save you some time to take a closer look at what has been suggested to you.

OK, thanks I'll have another go at Carrs suggestions and try again before I do anything drastic.

Pleased to report that java applets are once again working in my browser. Having re-installed the JVM a couple of times before I even posted on here, this morning I went back to carrs' 2nd posting again and went and removed the JVM from the View Objects option from the browser. Then did the same from Control Panel and then used the link to get a fresh copy of 1.4.1_03. All is working now, so thanks again to all who have contributed.

Yup. Must remove it before you reinstall...can't just overwrite...
