netwrok browse

Hi

been on this all day so my head is spinning.
Xp pro system running SP3.

Internet access via the usual router om 192.168.0.1

four other pc's connected.

All but one can browse the netwrok see shared printers and drives and access the internet.

The last one refuses to browse the network, cannot see shared printers but can go on the internet.

I can ping from this PC to all the others on the network.

I installed one piece of software on this PC which needed to connect to another PC on the network and it browsed and connected to the other PC automatically.

I've tried disabling the firewall, and setting a fixed IP but when I try to browse the netwrok It sees the workgroup but throws up a permissions error.

I've created a new account with administrator permissions and thst still does not le me setup network printers or access shared drives.

Would appreciate any and all suggestions

This is definitely a network permissions or firewall issue. Are you able to browse the affected computer's shares from the other PCs with no issues? In other words, is the issue both ways, or just on that one PC?

Are you sure you set up Windows Network on that machine - is it set to "share files and printers" or not?

Is the affected computer part of the same WorkGroup? If not, you can simply change this under computer properties if you want... right-click "My Computer", select properties, then name, then change button..

thanks for the rapid response. The issue is only with this one specific PC the other three can see each other and browse and view files/folders with no problems.

It's just this one pc that can neither be browsed or browse the other pc's on the network.

As I said if I explore the pc is shown is the workgroup tree it's juts when you try to access you get that horrible generic "you dont have permissions " message.

Yeah, in that case, it's probably directly a setting on that machine. Try running the Home Network Setup Wizard to see if file and print sharing is enabled, and changing the workgroup name to be what the others are using. Also if it's got a 3rd party firewall, you'll have to change things there, such as "home network settings" or "allowed ip ranges" something like that - depends upon what firewall you're using, b/c they all seem to have different terminology in that area.

you are not going to like this but having spent oodles of time on this I formated and reinstalled the offending PC and it came up on the Network perfectly.

Not a solution I know but .....

You could have a corrupted windows network socket, happens in xp sometimes.


1) Go to start, run, cmd, OK
2) After Cmd opens type this:-
netsh winsock reset catalog
--press enter

3) and again after pressing enter

netsh intip reset reset.log

4) Reboot!!!!

rclarke250 (or anyone), Very late reply, but life is busy...Your suggestion helped, but only 50%. I can now see other computers on the network with the trobulesome pc. The troublesome pc can see and utilize all the features of the network, but no other computor can access it.

When I "view network computers", from other pc's on the network, I can see the troublesome computer, but when I click on it, I get a msg that says it is not accessable and that the network path was not found.

All computers are running xp sp3. I've run the network wizard exactly the same on all 5 computers on the network, and only this one is a pain in the A$$.

Hoping you have another good suggestion.

Can you access the PC by IP address?
Say if you type the following in a Windows Explorer window does it let you in the PC:

\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
or
\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharedfolder\

Can you Ping the PC by name?
Does it resolve correctly to its IP address?
Do you have any shared folders on the troublesome PC?
Have you tried tuning off the firewall on the troublesome PC?

Phil, Thanks for the quick reply on a Sunday. Cannot access via windows exp with IP addres and pings time out.
All of this was tried with the firewall turned off.

For sure I have files and folders shared, including the C drive.

One thing I forgot to mention previously is that the troublesome pc is running xp pro media center, and all others that are playing nice are xp home. But I ran the home and small office network wizard exactly the same on all pcs.

Just double checked and it is a member of the proper workgroup. It can see and utilize all other pcs on the network.

Here's something odd. in IPconfig, the DNS Suffix, Subnet mask and default gateway all match the other pcs. But there are 2 IP address. One that matches the format of all others on the network and is 192.168.1.64 as expected. Then there is a 2nd IP address located SM & DG and it reads;

fe80: :217:31FF:feb0:cc4f%4

what the fuhell is this??

Its the IPv6 address. Unless you network is using IPv6 you should be able turn it off.

Go to the connection Properties, and un-check the IPv6 protocol from the list.
