i have a 5 pc workgroup at home, 4 of which are running xp pro. the 'file server and internet connection sharing server' is running windows 2000 pro. This is a workgroup, not a domain. i can easily read the contents of the win2k machine, accessing it as Administrator i can access, edit and delete any file i want from a remote machine (the xp machines). however, i cannot access any of the files on the xp machines from a remote pc, only printers. When connecting to for example "\\remotepc\c$" (xp computer's c: drive) it asks for a logon box. i type in a username and password for that pc and it tells me it is unrecognised. Does it matter that the xp machines are set up to use the "fast user switching" logon instead of the old win2k/nt logon? i have the drives all shared. anybody got any clues?
Thanks a Lot

Old tiP: im not sure this will work but when logging on to the remote machine try \\remotepcname\username as the username and that accounts password. It may seem wierd but it may work

Greg, Are you able to see all the XP computers in the network neighbour hood in the Win2k machine ?

yeh i can see them in "computers near me" but i cannot even open the computer to see its shared files from the win2k machine. its so annoying after 2000 being such a dream to network, microsoft has taken a step back in this respect i feel.

My post from earlier may have been wrong. Just tested it on a nt machine and had to use user: computername\username password: userpass.

Couldbe wrong but this sounds like a rights problem. As far as I am aware, isn't C$ mapping an administration mapping and therefore the login name would need to be:

[pcname]\administrator (or a user with admin rights for the remote pc)

Of cause you would then need to use the admin password password for the remote pc. Never had a problem with this arrangement and have even mapped into a reletives XP machine across the internet (used ip address instead of pcname). If this is not the case, have you tried seeting up named drive shares on the pc's instead of using the admin mapping??

With a mixed XP and W98 network I know that each XP computer must have a user account for the W98 computer(s) name and an active password (ie the password must be active on the W98 machine and the XP user account) before XP will allow access. Might be worth a try with your problem too.

XP has introduced more security and options over Win2K. Unfortunately, they also made some assumptions that are supposed to make it easier to use. On the whole, I think they succeeded but there are cases where you need to tweak it further. The Administrative Shares, like C$, are restricted. They are only for use by administrators.

On the XP machines, you need to turn off simple file sharing/
[ul][li]Open Folder Options in Control Panel. [/li]
[li]Click Start, and then click Control Panel.[/li]
[li]Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.[/li]
[li]On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended]. [/li][/ul]

Then you will be able to access more detail on the sharing and can set the permissions as you need them.

Hope that helps.

Have you enabled Internet Connection Firewall (Network Connection/Properties). If "yes", you must disable this feature.
