I have two boxes: One with xp home edition and one with 98se. I have a linksys router that acts as a residential gateway for both machines to connect to my dsl pppoe internet connection. Im having trouble setting up the two computers for file and print sharing and I've read some of the other posts here talking about disabling the built in firewall in xp. I was going to try that except when I try to click on the advanced tab in the properties window for my lan connection, I get a message telling me that my windows management instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. System Info is another application that uses this service and when it fails to load when I try saying that the Winmgmt service might not be running...So I checked to see and its not even listed in the services. While I was in the services utility, I checked to see if the ICF service was running and it isnt. I dont even know if this is the problem causing me not to be able to see the win98 computer or vice-versa on the network. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

If you still have problems with WMI, Start, Run and enter the following: "sc queryex winmgmt"

And tell me what it says.

Hey Bcastner:
After I posted last night I did some digging on the knowledge base at microsoft and found an article on how to fix corrupt wmi information. The article is found at and it fixed all my problems with my system information, the ability to create a network disk for setting up the other computer, and the setting for the firewall. I loaded ipx/spx with netbios and now the two see each other just fine. Im going to try and work it out so that the two can use tcp/ip though. Thanx again.
