I just bought a D-Link 4 port router. Hooked 2 PCs up both running WinXP Pro. Setup the router...ran the networking wizard on both PCs connecting them to the same workgroup. On the first PC in network places i can see the second PC but if i try to access it it says I don't have permission. On the second PC in network places I see nothing and get the message that it doesnt have permission to access the workgroup that I defined. Both computers have shared drives and folders. Both computers have internet access. I cannot ping the 2nd PC from the 1st PC and vice-versa. Any ideas what might be wrong? I can't believe I can't figure this out and I'll probably shoot myself when I realize what easy solution I'm missing. :)

Silly question but you have checked their IP addresses and subnet masks?

I found it easier to manually configure IP addresses after running the networking wizard.

Both computers must have a user created for the other computer.
So on each one add a user and set a password. Then (after unchecking use simple file sharing recommended [found in folder options view].)Then make sure the new users are given permissions on the shared folders and then access the shares and when prompted enter the user and password.

Check the settings on the d-link router. If possible use it as your dhcp server and set the workstations to automatically obtain an ip. I heard of a similar issue with a linksys router the fix was supposedly to install netbuei. I don't know just giving you ideas. I have less than nice things to say about xp.

Is there any button to activate-deactivate hub function on the router. I m just guessing i havent seen the router but its something many people who use cisco 803 etc overlook a lot. Its a tiny button. There may be one on your router too.
