i tried to browse to the website u gave me on the 98se and it still gives me that error any ideas?

This is starting to sound like an Internet Explorer problem, rather than a network connectivity problem. If you can ping, your network is functioning OK. If you can't browse by IP address (link above is Yahoo), then it's not a DNS problem.

Try pinging from the XP machine to the 98 machine by network address. Look in your IE Internet Options, Connections tab for 'Never dial a connection' and check LAN settings to make sure no proxy settings are checked. A repair of IE may cure the problem.

HI I TRIED THE IE REPAIR ON THE 98SE it didn't help .how do i ping from the xp to the 98se machine?it is checked has never dial a connection on my machine and no proxy settings are checked . any ideas?
pls help
if i ping another address on the 98 se should any address work?

virgineyes56,
hi!!!since you can ping a site from the win98se computer...try to set a static Ip on the win98se computer...get the IP address from the same range on the router...if the LAN IP of the router..192.168.1.1...make the IP add of the computer to 192.168.1.XX (from the range of the 2-99) and the subnet mask at 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is 192.168.1.1 and on the dns configuration..enable dns and type in the dns server search order..type in the DNS number and then click add...then type in again the second dns...then click add...then click ok all the way out...restart
then after that try to ping the websites...see if you can go on line...
hope that would be a great help....

virgineyes56,
hi...so if you want to have a step by step procedure on how to set up a static IP...here it goes...
this one is for the windows 98SE PC:
1. go to control panel
2. look for network icon..double click it
3. look for the TCP/IP of the network adapter that youre using.
4. select that TCP/IP and click on the properties button
5. youll have different tabs:
a. look for IP address tab:
IP Address: 192.168.1.XXX
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
b. look for gateway:
new gateway: 192.168.1.1
click on add..its now under the installed gateway
c. look for DNS Configuration TAb:
click enable DNS
type any name on the HOST NAME...just leave the
domain name blank
on the dns server search order...type in the dns
numbers that ull get from the router...on the user
interface
after typing in one set of dns number..dont forget
to click the add button

after doing all this jsut click OK and OK or close all the way out until it asked you to restart the PC.
tehn after restarting...you can now go on the internet coz i believe its a DNS problem already...
hope that it would be a great help...
if you want some screen shots for windows 98se, try to visit this site ok?..thanks and god bless

how about the dns numbers from the router, how is that done could anyone get back to me tonite pls pls

The DNS server information should be on your ISP's web site. Or go to the XP machine, open a Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes). A lot of things will display, including the DNS server addresses. Use these same IP addresses for your DNS server info on the 98 machine.

Thanks Smah great help I appreciate it it came up eith only one dns address is this normal? Also where do u guys learn all this about networking where is the best site or the best place to start .I wanna learn .
