I can't for the life of me figure out what is wrong with my network. This is driving me insane!
Here's the setup:

One PC running W2K Pro
One PC on W98SE
Both connected to a Netgear 16-port hub, which for the record is functional.

There are others that have or will be connected to the network but for now this is it. Even this simple setup is dysfunctional.

Both PCs have TCP/IP, IPX, Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing. The W2k has NetBEUI also. W2K system has 2 NICs, but neither of them reliably make my network go like it should.

Currently, there is no evidence of a working network at all: each PC can only see itself in the network neighborhood. In the past, they have been able to see each other, and I'm not at all sure what changed. At that time, the W98 machine could see the W2K, but when trying to access it would only get a blank directory listing, even though each computer has shared files. The W2K PC could connect to the W98 and, after a long delay, see its shared files.

At one point there was also a W95 PC on this test network, it had no problem whatsoever exchanging files with the W98 PC. This leads me to believe that this is a Win2000 issue.

Any help would let me sleep again... please.

PS: all drives are FAT32.
PPS: users have been created on the W2K PC for the network login.

Get rid of IPX protocol from your win98se and win2k machine and ensure u only have TCP /IP and NetBEUI on both machines as your protocol.

The above is a good start, IPX is not needed at all.

On your 98 machine, goto Control Panel>Network and ensure that File and print sharing is enabled. Then go to the file and print sharing properties and ensure that LMAnnouce is set to yes. This will enable the browsing aspect of things.

Make sure that the network connections is enabled. I have noticed that W2K will disable LAN connections for no reason. Also, if you happen to have any other nics in the machine, make sure they are "disabled".

Make sure you have setup account(s) and privileges on the Win2K machine and that the Win98 machine logs in with Client for Microsoft Networks, with the appropriate account name and login password.
This should solve you problem!

Hi Sigma,
If none of the previous posts help, try this: check your win2k machine to see if you have DHCP inable. If you have DHCP enabled, your other machines should be configured to optain and IP address from you win2k machine. After checking this configuration make sure that your w2k box is the first to boot on the network, or you'll have to go through the "winipconfig, and release all, then renew all thing, to get your IP.
Personally, I don't use NetBEUI on my home network, just TCP/IP.
You may also want to atleast check if you can Ping the other machines after this.
Good luck ;)
