I have a wired windows 2003 domain. I have once client who cannot connect to the network. In the local area connection status it shows that it is trasmitting packets but not receiving them. So far, it has sent 845 packets and received 0. It can ping itself, but not onto the network. I have tried a different cable and a different port on the switch. Any ideas what it could be besides hardware? It is an onboard NIC on a laptop, so I can't just install another one.

Turn off any firewall and/or anti-virus software. You said you cant ping the network, were you trying to ping another machine on the network? Try pinging the gateway.
Check for a static IP address, if it has one set it to DHCP. If it is DHCP try setting it to a static IP. Can this person use the internet if plugged into say their home network connection or some other internet connection?
I had a similar incident where a cable tech person set the person to a static IP address at the users home and when they came into work couldn't get onto the network, took me an hour to figure out what had been done.

I had the firewall already turned off, tried turning off anti-virus also and did nothing. This computer is local to the DHCP server, but can't ping it or the gateway.
I have tried DHCP and static IP address, either way limited or no connectivity, with 0 packets received.
I haven't tried plugging it into a different internet connection. I intend to call Dell this afternoon if I can't figure anything else out. Will take it home and try to plug into cable modem if Dell doesn't help.

Ok, that was a strange one. Before I called Dell I decided to hook the same cable up to a different, new computer so that tech support wouldn't blame my cable or switch. Well, it did the same thing... limited or no connectivity. I had to restart the DHCP service, and then it started working. Now, why static IP addresses didn't work, I don't understand!! Oh well, thanks for the suggestions.
