We are trying to set a home network between a laptop (Windows ME) and a tower (Windows 98) We have run the 'Home Networking Wizard' on the Lap Top and Tower which included creating a set up floppy which we used to set up the tower. We have set the work groups as the same and enabled file and print sharing on both computers.

Having re-started both computers after running the set up the tower finds itself in the 'Entire Network' in 'Network Neighbourhood', but when we click on 'Entire Network' on the laptop we get an error message that reads - 'Unable to browse the network. This request is not supported by the Network'.

Background:

On both computers the hardware appears to be installed correctly with the devise manager reporting that the:

'Unix USB to 10/100 Ethernet adaptor is working properly' - Laptop

'Zonnet ZEN3200 Fast Ethernet Adaptor is working properly'- Tower

(Ethernet cable is connected)

Under 'Network' we have selected 'Client for Microsoft Networks on both machines.

For TCP/IP Properties

'Specify an IP address' selected we have set the IP Address for both computers as 192.168.0.1 & .2 respectively. The Subnet Masks are both set to 255.255.255.0

(On the lap top we have edited the above properties for TCP/IP -> Unex USb To 10/100 Ethernet Adapter, and on the tower we edited the properties for TCP/IP -> Zonnet ZEN3200 Fast Ethernet Adapter)

Can you ping each of the machines?
Check that each machine is in the same workgroup.
What sort of a cabling/hub are you using?

The ethernet connection btween 2 machines must either be a crossover cable or an ethernet hub.

Agree w/Rhort & bobmcb. Straight patch cables w/hub or crossover cable without hub. Go over all settings again. Bad cable??

I have the same problem with sharing a printer on the same type of network. All workgroups are the same. The computers are sharing an internet connection so the cables are all okay. I just can't share a printer or browse other computers from the ME machines.

Any advice?
