Hi,
I'm trying to network my printers and am having trouble. My desktop where the router is wired is running vista and my laptop runs xp.

I've got my Hp printer working fine, but my Lexmark x4270 is showing up, but when I click on printer settings it says that they access is denied.

I'm logged on to the network and the other printer is printing fine. Do I need to download another driver? When I searched for and found my printers on the network and added them to my laptop it automatically installed drivers, but this one won't work.

Thanks,
Chris

Let me clarify something first that I just found out. I can right click on the network printer and open up the properties. It's only when I click on the printing preferences box at the bottom that I get a long error code. I can also print from the printer, but I can't adjust the print settings.

I've run the installation CD for that printer, but still no luck.

The reason it was saying I didn't have access was because I hadn't put in the password to access the network yet, duh, lol.

Try right-clicking on the Printer and selecting the Run As Administrator option, then look at the Security Tab and check the access permissions for Manage Printers or Documents.

What is the error message or number you are seeing?

The error I'm getting is "Function address 0x5f4d06c8 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000005) Some of all property page(s) may not be displayed."

The computer that I'm having the problem on is the laptop running XP. I can print to the desktop over the network but can't adjust the print settings. When I right click on the printer, I don't see the run as administrator option.

Thanks

How is this lexmark printer connected to the network? Is it conected with a wireless print server?

Let me make sure I'm explaining myself right. First of all, all I have is a wireless router on my Vista Desktop and I pick it up from my laptop which runs XP.

I installed my Lexmark printer on the Vista PC and went to the Lexmark site and got the Vista driver that you suggested above. The printer works fine from the desktop where it's installed and I can access the printer preferences. I then right clicked the printer and chose to share it.

Next I go to my XP laptop and go to the add a printer wizard. I click on the search network option for a printer. Then I see the printer on the network and click on it. It automatically installs a driver on my laptop running XP and although I can print from my laptop wirelessly, I can't access or change the print settings. It prints using a lot of ink and basically I just want to put it on quick print, but I can't.

When I go to my desktop where the printer is originally shared from, it has an option when I click on properties and then sharing that says "additional drivers" and asks if I want to install additional drivers for network users running different versions of windows so that they don't have to chose the correct driver everytime they print from the network.

When I try to do this, all I see is two options. One has a checkbox beside "Itanium" and one beside "x64." If I click on either one, it asks for a location of the driver that I want to install. I really don't know what either one of the above is, lol.

I know it's hard for you guys to read all this and try to sort through it. This is the best way my limited pc knowledge can explain it :) I really appreciate the help.

installed my Lexmark printer on the Vista PC"

Can you at your Vista Desktop, right-click on the Printer and selecting the Run As Administrator option, then look at the Properties/ Security Tab, and check the access permissions for Manage Printers or Documents. Making sure that the username on your XP Laptop are the same name as usernames on your Vista Desktop, and that the username from XP has permission to manage Printers and Documents. If not try adding the username, once they are the same on both machines, to the list of permissions.

Windows Vista: Networking

OK, now I've got it. Try this:

On the Vista Desktop, go to printers, right-click on the printer & select Properties. Select the Security tab, single click to select the 'Everyone' group. Then assign the everyone group the 'manage printers' permission by checking the box, then Apply.
