Small network setup, windows 98 machines, one nt server. Everything works fine with windows 98 machines and NT machiens. However, I have a slight problem with my xp box. I can't connect to any of the 98 machines. I can ping them just fine, I can't see them nor can I connect to any of them.

I can connect into my NT system, just not any of the others. If you could give me any help to this problem it would be much appreciated. Netbeui isn't installed on my xp box, it is on the 98 machines, but I still can not get it to work. I did have netbeui installed on the xp box, but that got me nowhere. If you could give me some help with this matter. Thanks

Well, this hasn't answered my questions. I've still not found an answer on that webpage. I am not a newbie when it comes to networks, but this is really driving me nuts. I can't seem to get this to work for anything. I don't know if it's a little problem or a big problem.

If anyone else knows, please give me some advice or some different things to check. Thanks

Since you said it's a small network, I'll assume you're running static IP's, so try this:

In the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, make entries for each of those 98 machines and their IP addresses.

Open a DOS prompt on the XP box. Type "Net use (machinename)" for each one - this will establish a connection to the machine's IPC server.

Now see if you can view 'em.

I am running 3 desktop win98 machines and 1 xp machine without errors. Could you give us a little more detail on how you have set it up?

I am having a very similar problem. The 98 Machines cannot access the shared printer on the XP Pro machine. All are attached to the NT Domain and authenticated in. The Network is to big to start dealing with host files on each PC.

most of the problems i have run into are not only with permissions, but also with users in general. 98 will try to connect to the ipc$ share if the credentials for the current user do not match an account on the xp box. it will not allow you to enter a different user/password combo, only a different password for the current user.

if you want the 98 machines to access something on the xp machine, you'll need to have some an account on the xp box that corresponds to the currently logged in user on the 98 machine.

i have been able to access shares on xp from 98 after doing this.

if all computers are on an nt/2k domain, this shouldn't be as big of a problem. mike griffith

That's a definite - the account being used on the 98 machine must exist on the XP machine and vice-versa when you're not in the domain environment. In the domain environment, local accounts should be avoided in XP in favor of domain accounts.

Kipozo,

Are you running an NT domain? (you mention NT server). Is your XP Home or Professional? I was just wondering if the 98 machines were in a domain and the XP machine in a workgroup?

All machines are logged into the domain, even the XP machine. I actually solved the problem by setting up the rights so that "everybody" can access the printer" and then connecting to the IP address (I had to make it static) not the "name" of the computer.
