MY
I'm currently attempting to install my first network. So far, i've managed to set up my RH Linux 8.0 as my server, and now attempting to set Windows XP as the client.

My RH 8.0 has 1 NIC, connected to a switch. My XP also has 1 NIC connected to the switch. I have an ADSL modem also connected to the switch. The furthest i've gone with this, is managing my Linux so that it is the dialer of the ADSL modem, making it the owner of the connection. I've also made sure that my Linux sees my XP and vice versa. They can ping each other without a problem, and both are also able to see the modem. IP's are as follows:

192.168.1.1 = ADSL Modem
192.168.1.2 = Windows XP
192.168.1.3 = Redhat Linux 8.0

Now my problem is this. How do i get my XP to make internet connection via my Linux? I've tried setting a Network Bridge in XP and setting my Linux as the gateway. Am i on the right track here? Or should the gateway be my ADSL modem? My XP is unable to make any internet connections, but actally my Linux is already connected to the Internet. Is the problem on the XP side of things? Or is Linux not allowing the connection from Windows XP?

Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated :)

i think u should either have a proxy or a firewall setup in ur linux server. if security and restrictions is not a major issue, then u can go for a proxy, basically both will act as a internet server for ur intranet.

i think windows is no coming up with some kind of service which will run on all the workstations for sharing the internet.

when u stup ur proxy, then u need to go and change the internet explorer settings,as to inform the explorer that ur internet gateway is now ur linux server ( u need to mention the ip of linux server )

hope this would get ur XP access the internet

well thanks for that response. I did in fact set up Squid as a proxy for web requests. And i think that Squid is running fine. However when i try to connect to a URL, it says Access Denied. I've also tried to ping remote networks via my XP, but failed. No response. My guess is that Linux is not allowing XP to make outgoing connections.

After spending a few hours reading HOWTO's, i managed to come across IP Maqsquerading. This is something im totally unfamilliar with. It states that IP Masq. is required for other LAN nodes to connect to the Internet. So now, I think I have a solution to my previous problem. However, with that I've come up with a new one. How to configure IP Masq. I've read all the HOWTO's, followed all the instructions, but still my XP cant connect to the Internet. I need HELP!!! How do we configure IP Masq to accept connections from a certain Private IP?
