I have two pcs both are running win98se that i am trying to network

i have gone through many networking articles but have not found a solution to my problem

in network neighbourhood ::
:: on my main machine (called "Main") I can only see the "Main" computer icon when i click into 'entire network' i cannot see any workgroups
:: but on my other machine (called "Bash") I can see the "bash" computer icon and in 'entire network' i can see he workgroup (called "HomeNet")

Both pcs are in the same work group (ive checked a dozen times)
the two IPs are :: Main : 192.168.1.1 & Bash : 192.168.1.2
i have tried changing the IPs to a few others but no difference

as far as i can tell all setting and drivers are correct, i changed them to whatever the walkthrough says but still no avail.

i have tried re-installing windows on both machines and have uninstalled all network componants and re-installed (on both machines)

can anyone offer any suggestions for me to try.

thanks in advance
I can't be bothered to have a sig!

roamer i was starting to consider ditching the lot and buying all new stuff anyway

ill try what allenEd suggested if that doesnt work then ill just buy new stuff (hub w/ straight cables, and new cards)

anyways thanks for everyones help
im sure ill get it sorted one day :p I can't be bothered to have a sig!

how fraustrating can one problem be?

i tried changing workgroups
and if both computers are in different workgroups then both computers can see both workgroups but can only enter the workgroup it is in

when i put them both back to being in the same workgroup only one computer can see both computers and the other one cant see any (nor browse the network)
which ever computer i boot first is the one that can see both

also at this point if i use "net view" from the computer that can see both then both computers are listed, but i cant ping the other computer
this is the same from both pcs

unless somebody knows of a fix for this, ill just get new equipment, or will i have the same problems with a hub system? I can't be bothered to have a sig!

can you try a different NIC? A+, MCP, CCNA

ive been talking to someone who has had -alot- of experience in networking and win98 is pretty crap when it comes down to it so ive decided to give up and update my OS just after christmas

thanks for everyones help

and good luck to anyone else that decides to try this :) I can't be bothered to have a sig!

SlykFX,
I've been watching this thread for some time now. I really can't think of why the problem is happening to you, but I would try the following before you assume it's the OS:

- buy a cheap hub ($15-20) that can do 10/100 full duplex and DHCP if it's an option
- buy some regular CAT5 cables (not crossover)

Try connecting the two pc's through the hub. If the hub has DHCP built-in, then set the pc's to "obtain an IP address automatically".

This would be the next cheapest option aside from upgrading the OS or buying a 2 or 4-port router. My guess is that the two pc's were having an IP translation conflict. This should get around that. Win98SE is not the reason why this is happening to you - upgrading will only piss you off more if it still doesn't work...

I have a two computer network - both with WIN98se connected through two netgear 10/100mb Netgear network cards with a Crossover cable - make sure you have a working CROSSOVER Cable - recheck the endings if you built it yourself (i did)

I formatted one computer and the network wouldn't show on either - i never tried to ping them either. I eventually overcame the problem and deleted everything from the network setting except:
THE NETWORK CARD
AND THE TCP/IP For the dial up adapter
When the coms restarted, they were fixed.
Try making the computer log on the windows log on - Not the Windows Family Logon thing.
Delete that!
HOPE THIS HELPS

ok, I just jump in, you never know...

First, there is absolutely NO need to start messing with workgroups or any other windows naming or sharing option.

The first and only thing that matters to start with is to be able to PING from one pc to the other.
If that does not work, nothing else will.

1: Why are there dial up adapters on both PC's?
If not needed, get rid of it.
2: Make the 2 PC's IDENTICAL, except the name and the IP.
3: Subnets on 255.255.255.0 not 255.255.0.0 as your friend suggested as if it does not matter, stricktly it does not, it just takes longer to search.
4: Fill in the Default Gateway on the 2 PC's, or, if one is connected to the internet with cable or so, give the Default Gateway from the other PC the IP from the first.
5: Be 10000% sure the crossover cable is correct. Measure the wiring if at all possible. Take it out and test with a battery and a light bulb if necessary.
6: When the cable is connected, at insert, a LED should go ON on the NIC (both). If not --> cable !!
7: DISABLE the firewall while performing any tests.!!!!
The solution is out there. [morning]

marcs41 (it's even later now),

Just a couple of points for your attention - all based on my experiences.

1. You can ask someone to do testing with a battery and a light buld but they won't know what you mean.
2. You can still get a good signal(NIC lights on) from a bad connection.

Kind regards (though I am now off to bed, so I won't see your answer for another 8 hours or so).

still later ..

1: I know
2: I know

But how else to explain to test if they don't happen to have a multimeter...
The Led's are an indication, if they are OFF, no point in tryin any further.

Nite The solution is out there. [morning]

Any time I have trouble seeing other computers that I just networked and I AM sure that the cables are not at fault. I simply put the IP's and Hostnames in both the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files on both computers and that clears that up.

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 main
192.168.1.2 bash

Make sure when you save the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files that if there is a .txt extension, remove it to simply have HOSTS etc... These two files should be put in the Windows root directory. You can find the sample files called HOSTS.sam and LMHOSTS.sam there.

well i finally got around to trying frostys' suggestion. and well im typing this from bash (the non-internet computer) so u can imagine how it went :)

thnx so much frosty I can't be bothered to have a sig!
