I have 2 pcs and a cable modem all connecting through a switch. 1 pc runs windows xp and the internet connection works fine. The other pc runs windows 98 and can not connect to the internet or connect to the windows xp computer. I don't really need it to connect to the internet I just need it to see drives on the xp computer. I ran the network setup wizard seleting 'this computer connects to the internet directly or through a hub' and followed the remaining steps. I create a network setup diskette and ran it on the win98 computer. Neither see each other. Please help.

on each computer type

ipconfig

One line will just say

IP Address . . . . . . : 222.222.222.222

(Where the 2's are replaced with other digits)

Then go to the other computer, and type

ping 222.222.222.222

This will let you know if the computers can talk to each other. If not, it's almost certainlly a problem with the actual wiring and setup, if they can, then it's just a windows setting. Gives us a place to start from anyway.

Does the XP computer have 2 network cards? If not, you're not going to be able to set it up this way.

Your connected wrong, with a cable mobem you need to use a cable/dsl router, run the software that came with it and your golden, life is easy this way. I have three PC's connected to the internet this way, also have networking access. If you have norton internet security you have to go to network wizard after the above is done.
